Marlene O’Toole outpaces fundraising, but Dennis Baxley loans $100K to keep lead in SD 12

in Statewide/Top Headlines by

Lady Lake Republican Rep. Marlene O’Toole was able to bring in more contributions than Rep. Dennis Baxley last month, but the Ocala Republican threw in $100,000 of his own money to further increase his lead in the Senate District 12 race. O’Toole, who filed for the seat March 2, brought in $11,150 in her first month and spent nothing, leaving her with a five-figure campaign account at month’s end. Nearly all of her contributions came from subsidiaries of Central Florida…

Bill to repeal shacking up ban unanimously passes in committee

in Statewide/Top Headlines by

Florida is one of only three states that still has a law on the books prohibiting men and women from living together if they are not married. Attempts in 2011 and again in this year’s regular Legislative Session to repeal it failed, but Hollywood Democratic state Sen. Eleanor Sobel hopes it finally will happen in 2016. On Tuesday the Senate Judiciary Committee voted unanimously to support Sobel’s proposal (SB 498). The law now states that a couple found to be “living…

House panel votes down revision to ‘stand your ground’ law

Dennis Baxley that would change the law. The Ocala Republican wanted to require that prosecutors prove a defendant was not acting in self-defense when that person is asking for immunity. Baxley said the change was needed to respond to recent court rulings. The National Rifle Association backed the bill…

Lawmakers vow to “smash the home tax”

in Statewide/Top Headlines by

A gaggle of Republican House members gathered outside the Capitol Monday morning to register their opposition to a bill they call the “home tax” – and to smash it in effigy. “Any time you are taking money from homeowners, it’s a tax hike,” said Rep. Dennis Baxley. “We always have to be vigilant because increased costs to homeowners can come coded in other language. It’s still a tax!” The bill in question is HB 203, which would shift the burden when…

‘Religious freedom’ bill to prevent gay adoptions refiled for 2016

in Statewide/Top Headlines by

State Rep. Julio Gonzalez filed his first bill of the 2016 legislative year on Wednesday, and it was a doozy: a proposal to give immunity to certain businesses who wish not to render certain services on grounds of “religious freedom,” including private child-placement agencies. Specifically, the bill amends the Religious Freedom Restoration Act of 1998 to read that an entity owned by a religious institution is “not required to produce, create, or deliver a custom product or service that would be contrary…
