Al Lang Stadium to host Halloween weekend rugby tourney

Some big-time rugby sevens is making its way to St. Pete this Halloween. Tampa Bay Rowdies owner Bill Edwards and the St. Pete/Clearwater Sports Commission have linked up with American Rugby 7s, a sports and entertainment production group trying to carry rugby into the American mainstream, to bring an Olympic-style sevens tournament to Al Lang Stadium — the Halloween Rugby 7s Elite Invitational. Local restaurants will be considered for Pier Park space

The city will consider local restaurants for the planned eatery space at the end of Pier Park. Language in the city’s Request for Proposals now includes the word “locally.” A petition began on Change.org after some Pier Park supporters and even opponents got wind of what the city was asking for. In the original RFP language the city asked for any restaurateur submitting a proposal to “Offer a nationally or regionally recognized chain restaurant or uniquely branded destination restaurant.” The…

Pier demolition debris gathered up in case Erika visits St. Petersburg

There’s a tropical storm, maybe a hurricane, maybe heading straight for us. Maybe. Nevertheless, demolition of the inverted pyramid has been temporarily put on hold in order to make sure the site is safe should a storm maybe hit St. Petersburg. Crews were on site Friday afternoon clearing debris from the Pier head into large bins using cranes and other heavy machinery. The overall structure is still mostly intact. To a mixed chorus of “hallelujahs” and sobs the St. Petersburg Pier is finally going to come down. According to St. Pete Mayor Rick Kriseman’s spokesperson, Ben Kirby, the city has secured the necessary permitting from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to begin demolition. Vans Warped Tour heads to St. Pete

The Vans Warped Tour will roll through St. Pete Friday featuring nonstop music starting at 11 a.m featuring punk, ska and rock bands from all over. In all more than 100 bands will rock Vinoy Park in downtown St. Pete for the all-day music festival.
