No Florida Senate bid for Dwight Dudley as he bears down on being re-elected in HD 68

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

St. Petersburg based House Democrat Dwight Dudley confirmed recently what has been common knowledge over the past month or so – that he has no intention of challenging Jeff Brandes in the state Senate District 22 seat later this year. Dudley says that if last year’s redistricting of the senate districts had turned out differently, he may have chosen to run for the Senate, but that simply didn’t happen. “If there was a seriously useful well drawn seat, but it didn’t turn out that…

Planned Parenthood calls latest Florida anti-abortion bill extremely dangerous to women

in Statewide/Top Headlines by

Gov. Rick Scott signed the omnibus anti-abortion bill HB 1411 Friday, enacting a new law that denies public resources to women’s health clinics that provide abortion services. The measure doesn’t eliminate state funding of abortion, a tactic that’s been illegal for decades. It does, however, now block money for preventive medical care at the same facilities where privately funded abortions occur. The bill also requires doctors performing abortions to have admitting privileges at a nearby hospital. The same requirement is now being reviewed by the U.S.…

Some objected to the president choosing to hang with Raul Castro while watching that historical baseball game in Havana between the Rays and the Cuban national team. They note that he devoted less than a minute to Brussels in his 34-minute speech on Tuesday morning. Some thought it in poor taste when he…

Although advocates of solar power in Florida took a blow when a proposed constitutional amendment to expand solar power rights for consumers and businesses failed to qualify for the ballot this year, there’s still much to be hopeful for. That’s what Michael Brune, the executive director of the Sierra Club, told a crowd in St. Petersburg this week. “There are more than 70 percent of Americans who want to see stronger investments in energy efficiency, which has bipartisan support, for…
