in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

Palm Beach Commissioner Melissa McKinlay announced Thursday she will raise money for her congressional campaign in Tampa this weekend — and she’ll be joined by some serious local Democratic brass. Five-term Tampa U.S. Rep. Kathy Castor will address attendees at the brunch event Saturday morning in support of McKinlay, who is seeking the 18th Congressional District seat left open by incumbent Democrat Patrick Murphy‘s decision to run for the Senate in 2016. Besides Castor, who will keynote the event, Tampa Mayor Bob Buckhorn, St. Petersburg…

Poll of redrawn CD 13 reveals just how close Charlie Crist vs. Rick Baker could be

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

A new survey from St. Pete Polls of a newly reconfigured Congressional District 13 map shows that a potential Charlie Crist vs. Rick Baker matchup could be a cliffhanger. The survey shows Crist leading with 46.2 percent of the vote, to Baker’s 42.2 percent. The remaining 11.6 percent are undecided. Baker leads the only declared Democrat in the CD 13 race, Eric Lynn, by a 51-28 percent margin, with 20 percent undecided. The Florida Supreme Court declared earlier this month that a total of…

Mitch Perry Report for 7.24.15 — Scary movies

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

Happy Friday, everyone. I was going to write about another subject for today, but it feels a bit trivial compared to the big headline of the morning. I know that the overwhelming majority of gun owners in America are responsible. But even if there’s only a tiny, tiny percentage of people who are irresponsible with guns in this country (of which there are reportedly around 300 million floating around), it’s a problem. This morning Americans are awakening to yet another gun shooting…

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

The years-long “Fight for $15” for fast-food workers received a huge boost earlier this week after New York officials recommended lifting pay for thousands of fast-food workers throughout the state.  Meanwhile, here in Florida, Miami Democratic state Sen. Dwight Bullard filed a bill (SB 6) this week that would raise Florida’s minimum wage to $15 an hour. In St. Petersburg, about 20 activists gathered in front of City Hall to seize on the momentum from the New York announcement to call…

Eric Lynn says he’s in the CD13 race to stay

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

Charlie Crist. Darden Rice. Ken Welch. Dwight Dudley. There are some prominent Democrats whose names have been floated in the media as possibilities to run in the CD 13 race next year, now that the district is likely to be much more advantageous for the party after the Florida Legislature redraws the district in advance of next year’s election. The Florida Supreme Court declared last week that a total of eight congressional districts need to be redrawn, after they declared…

Mitch Perry Report for 7.10.15 — A whole lotta political stuff

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

It was just an average Thursday in the Florida political world. But first a note about Jeb Bush, who announced that through his own campaign and his Super PAC Right to Rise, has raised a total of $114 million this year, with all but $11 million coming from Right to Rise, which began fundraising for the “non-candidate” back in mid-December. You remember the $100 million figure was broadcast months ago as part of the “Shock and Awe” phase of the…

Dwight Dudley calls for independent commission to redraw Florida congressional districts

in Statewide/Top Headlines by

Although it wouldn’t take effect for seven more years, Pinellas County House Democrat Dwight Dudley says it’s time for Florida to take the political act of redistricting out of the hands of (Republican) politicians, and into the hands of an independent political commission. That’s what’s now the law in six states — Alaska, Arizona, California, Idaho, Montana and Washington (though with only one representative, Alaska and Montana don’t actually need one). But most of the states have drawn their congressional and legislative districts through…
