Florence Snyder: Why children die: B.A.B.Y. Court works, but Florida prefers to pay for things that don’t

in Apolitical/Top Headlines by

Planting pinwheels may “raise awareness” of child abuse, but the hard and labor-intensive work of preventing child abuse goes on in places where skilled professionals collaborate to do more difficult things. One such place is Orange County’s B.A.B.Y. Court. There, Circuit Judge Alicia Latimore offers lollipops to toddlers and tots who have suffered the trauma of abuse or neglect. That’s the fun part. The judge’s serious, life-changing work is to closely monitor the progress of the teams of social workers…

Lawmakers aim to create jobs by cutting occupational licensing red-tape

in Statewide/Top Headlines by

Braiding hair without a license could get you in trouble in Florida. So could cutting and wrapping hair, manicuring fingernails, auctioneering property, landscaping, interior design and timekeeping at a boxing match. If you want to earn money or start a business in dozens of job categories, Florida requires a state-approved license – and they don’t come cheaply. The House Appropriations Committee approved a bill that would give $1.8 million to the family of Devaughn Darling, who died in a Florida State University football practice in 2001. I hadn’t taken his class or even met him at the time but something I had written was a hot discussion topic that day. It was a letter in the student newspaper, the Florida Flambeau, mocking the Kappa Alpha fraternity for wearing Confederate uniforms and waving…

A Florida college student accused of randomly killing a couple in their garage and chewing on the dead man’s face told television psychologist Phil McGraw he was fleeing a demon-like figure named Daniel and only had a vague recollection of the slayings. In a 22-minute interview released Tuesday by prosecutors, Austin Harrouff said he lost his wits as he walked back to his father’s home after storming out of a restaurant where they had an argument. McGraw asked about “the…

Lens of time magnifies FSU experience for Oscar-nominated cinematographer

in Apolitical/Top Headlines by

Oscar nominee and Florida State University alumnus James Laxton is coming off the best professional experience of his life on the film “Moonlight,” which is nominated for eight Academy Awards — including Best Picture. Laxton earned an Oscar nomination for cinematography on the film and now, days before the 89th Academy Awards on Feb. 26, he’s still trying to process that news. “I don’t know if it’s sunk in yet. It definitely feels surreal but in a good way,” said…
