Five AP voters think FSU is the best team in the country

in Sports/Top Headlines by

Five guys. If they were fingers, you could make a fist. Five. A quintet. A basketball team. A rock and roll band. Five. That’s how many voters think FSU is the best team in the country. Oh, it isn’t enough. Alabama got 33 No. 1 votes, and Clemson got 16. Oklahoma got four, even though it did have enough to take the No. 3 spot in the poll ahead of Jimbo Fisher‘s Seminoles. Still, five people believe. It’s a start. Five…

FSU running low on quarterbacks as season opener approaches

in Sports/Top Headlines by

Jimbo Fisher is almost out of options. So heaven help him if another quarterback gets hurt. FSU, now within two weeks of its opening game against Ole Miss in Orlando, seems to be running low on quarterbacks. First, Sean Maguire breaks his foot and needs surgery. Then, backup Malik Henry is suspended indefinitely for a violation of team rules. All of that leaves Deondre Francois and the option of Fisher holding his breath. Francois hit 15 of 22 passes for…

First-time quarterbacks have played well for Florida State

in Sports/Top Headlines by

For Deondre Francois, life is a snap. All he has to do is play football. Francois, suddenly the starter at Florida State University as a redshirt freshman after Sean Maguire suffered a broken foot, simply has to start against a Top 20 opponent with a returning quarterback (Chad Kelly) while the nation looks on. Heck, it’s been done before. At FSU, quarterbacking is all about good starts. And good jobs in relief. You want to talk about relief? How about Marcus…

I’m not comparing myself to anyone,” Francois on Sunday. “I’m just trying to go out there and do the best that I can.” With Sean Maguire out four weeks due to…

Things just got a little harder for the Florida State football team. Redshirt senior quarterback Sean Maguire, considered a favorite to hold off redshirt freshman Deondre Francois, has a broken foot and will undergo surgery on his right foot “probably Monday,” according to head coach Jimbo Fisher. Maguire is supposed to miss four weeks, which  means he will miss the opener on Sept. 5 against Ole Miss. Francois has begun working with the first team. Fisher said Maguire hurt his…

FSU’s Jimbo Fisher opposes new ACC schedule tweak

in Sports/Top Headlines by

FSU coach Jimbo Fisher is standing up for the little guy … and it isn’t just because he wants a game. Fisher addressed the ACC’s consideration of either an eight-game schedule (with two other games against a Power Five conference) or a nine-game schedule with one. Fisher opposes the idea, saying eliminating games against FCS conferences would take money away from smaller programs. “How do they make their budget?” Fisher said to the Tallahassee Democrat. “Playing a big school. How…

Seminoles to open their season with a tougher test in 2016

in Sports/Top Headlines by

This year, there will be no easing into the college football season for FSU. This year doesn’t start with an outmanned directional school. This year, the Seminoles sweat. This year, they have a game, and all the risks that come with it. This year, they have Ole Miss, which is expected to be a top 10 school again. For the Seminoles of coach Jimbo Fisher, the game against the Rebels — and quarterback Chad Kelly — is ahead on Sept.…
