FSU overwhelmed as Houston stops Dalvin Cook cold

in Sports/Top Headlines by

The University of Houston overwhelmed Florida State in Atlanta Thursday afternoon, winning the Peach Bowl going away. The Cougars, clearly more fired up about playing in the Peach than FSU, won 38-24 for their 13th win of the year (13-1). Houston took a 21-3 first-half lead, then held off the Seminoles for the win. FSU, which won a national title two years ago and reached the playoffs last year, was never able to figure out the Houston defense. Houston’s rushing…

Houston’s strong run defense awaits Dalvin Cook in Peach

in Sports/Top Headlines by

The FSU Seminoles’ offense will not limp into today’s Peach Bowl. That offense, for the most part, resides in the legs of Dalvin Cook, who has finally had time to rest that nagging hamstring, which is a good thing for the Seminoles. It is the key matchup of the game, Cook’s legs against the Houston rushing defense. Cook was sixth in the country this year with 1,658 yards, which clearly makes him the biggest running threat the Cougars have faced.…

FSU’s quarterback is Sean Maguire — today and tomorrow

in Sports/Top Headlines by

For once, FSU’s Sean Maguire’s chief competitor won’t be looking over his shoulder. Everett Golson isn’t here, preferring to sit out this Peach Bowl for “personal reasons.” That leaves the job of playing against Houston in McGuire’s hands. Finally, it is his job. Finally, it is his team. And it will be his job against next season. Oh, FSU will have other quarterbacks. A program such as FSU always has. Freshman Deondre Francoise and recruit Malik Henry will be around. But…

For FSU, J.J. Consentino is now the backup quarterback

in Sports/Top Headlines by

He is one twist of an ankle away. One pulled hamstring. One aching wrist. So, are you prepared to see J.J. Consentino at quarterback for the Florida State Seminoles? Consentino is now the Seminoles’ backup quarterback following the “personal decision” of former starter Everett Golson not to accompany the team to the Peach Bowl. FSU coach Jimbo Fisher isn’t much of a dabbler at his quarterback position, but an injury to starter Sean McGuire could leave Consentino under center against…

Year in Review: FSU Seminoes don’t meet their high standards in 2015

in Sports/Top Headlines by

For most schools, it would have been a terrific season. A 10-2 record. A star running back. A great defense. But for FSU, the 2015 season will be one of disappointment. After winning a national title and reaching the college football playoffs in the two previous seasons, the Florida State Seminoles showed a bit of slippage this year. Part of the reason is that transfer quarterback Everett Golson didn’t match the hype, and eventually, he was replaced by Sean McGuire.…

FSU comes back in second half to beat upset-minded FAU

in Sports/Top Headlines by

The FSU Seminoles spent most of the afternoon staring an upset in the face in the Orange Bowl Classic. In the end, they made it look the other way. FSU rallied from a 12-point halftime deficit to beat Florida Atlantic, 64-59. FAU, 2-9 on the season, scored the game’s first six points and led 11-3 and 17-8. It was 35-23 at the half. But the Owls scored only 24 in the second half. It was 44-33 early in the second…

Mitch Perry Report for 12.16.15 – Fear and loathing in Las Vegas

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

With all the Republican candidates gathering at the Venetian in Las Vegas for the last GOP presidential debate in 2015, the question I ask you today is – will the Republican nominee be anyone other than Donald Trump or Ted Cruz? Trump was his classic self last night, but finally had somebody take it to him in the person of Jeb Bush, who had several well-rehearsed put-down lines that had the Donald mumbling to himself and making absurd faces. Bush condemned…
