‘Safe storage of loaded firearms’ bill filed in Florida Senate

in Statewide by

On Monday, Broward County Democratic state Sen. Gary Farmer, Jr. filed a bill that would tighten requirements on safely storing loaded firearms. Senate Bill 142 “[revises] the locations and circumstances in which a loaded firearm is required to be kept or secured with a trigger lock … [deleting] provisions relating to conditions for committing the crime of failing to safely store, leave, or secure a loaded firearm in a specified manner.” Among the “locations and circumstances” revised: storage of a firearm around…

Despite vow to ‘take on’ gun lobby, Gary Farmer earns an A+ rating from NRA. How?

in Peter/Top Headlines by

Many tidbits come across my desk, but this one jumped off my screen: Gary Farmer was just “awarded” an A+ rating by … wait for it … the National Rifle Association. If that doesn’t shock you, allow me to explain. During a very heated Democratic primary battle versus Jim Waldman in Senate District 34, the NRA’s scorecards became a yuuuge issue in the race. First, Farmer accused Waldman of earning an “A” rating. Waldman then fired back, calling it a lie…

Jim Waldman takes a swing at Gary Farmer in new ad

in Statewide by

Jim Waldman is using a new ad to set the record straight. The Coconut Creek Democrat released the ad  this week to dispute claims made by his opponent, Gary Farmer Jr. In the 30-second spot, Waldman says he is “sick of the fast talking lobbyists.” “Fast talking Farmer is really a big shot lobbyist who bundled hundreds of thousands of dollars to elect Rick Scott and right wing Republicans,” a female announcer says in the ad, before Waldman appears on…

Hey, I was on a business trip and sometimes when I am not at the console, a few details escape me and sometimes the big things float right by and I miss them. This was the latter. With only a few short weeks until qualifying, most of the state Senate races are starting to take shape. And, of course, there are some surprises. Last week we…

Email Insights: Senate candidate fundraising off video of Rick Scott getting yelled at in Starbucks

in Statewide/Top Headlines by

Remember the woman who shouted at Gov. Rick Scott in Starbucks on Tuesday? Gary Farmer, a Broward County Democrat, is hoping to raise a little campaign cash off of it. In an email to supporters on Friday, Farmer, who is running for state Senate in District 34, said while he understands that the episode “might just seem like a crazy person yelling” to some people, the woman — Lake Worth activist Cara Jennings — isn’t wrong. “Scott’s policies are evicerating…

Get the popcorn: State Senate candidate Gary Farmer takes on Rick Scott

in Statewide/Top Headlines by

This must be the year of challenging the status quo. First there was the surge — the nobody-predicted-it and damn-sure-nobody-thought-it-would-last — surge of Donald Trump. Then the world gave us the joy of watching a self-described socialist give Hillary, the used-to-be presumptive nominee of her party, a very real run for her money. It’s the year of taking the status quo and slamming it into the ground. And so maybe that’s why a State Senate candidate from Broward (uber-lawyer Gary…

Gaming out the Broward County state Senate races

in Statewide/Top Headlines by

With the Florida Supreme Court choosing the plaintiff’s map in the congressional redistricting fight, conventional wisdom (says that those same plaintiffs have a distinct advantage moving their Senate maps through Judge Reynolds’ court. And all of the plaintiffs’ maps are identical in Broward County. So how does that shake out, assuming one of the plaintiff maps is ultimately the one, for those who have been publicly eyeing those seats? For Perry Thurston and Gwyn Clarke-Reed, there really was never any suspense. There was…
