Tennessee adds another Heisman winner in Tide’s Derrick Henry

in Uncategorized by

That settles it. The Tennessee Titans are collecting Heisman Trophies. Tennessee took Alabama running back Derrick Henry in the second round of the NFL draft Friday, marking the second straight year the team has picked the Heisman Trophy winner. A year ago, the Titans picked Marcus Mariota. Henry fell in the draft, practically because running backs have been devalued in the NFL draft. But Henry lacked the burst of, say, Ezekiel Elliott, who went to Dallas with the fourth pick.

Young quarterbacks highlight FSU’s Spring game in Orlando

in Sports/Top Headlines by

A pair of young quarterbacks dueled down to the wire, and beyond it, as FSU’s spring game ended in a 24-24 tie. Coach Jimbo Fisher seemed to be enjoying the heroics of freshman Malik Henry and sophomore Deondre Francois so much, in fact, that he waved off a fumble by Francois and extended the game by 90 seconds. In short, Henry brought his team from behind, then Francois, then Henry, then Francoise led his team to the tying field goal…

Recruiting: State teams like their quarterbacks of the future

in Sports/Top Headlines by

A fresh start. A new beginning. Another leader. Above all, that’s what recruiting means to a college football program. And as excited as a fan might get from the attached stars to, say, an athlete or a defensive tackle, it is quarterbacking that drives recruiting, too. Henry had 1,832 points, beating Stanford’s Christian McCafferty (1,539) and Clemson’s DeShaun Watson (1,165 points.) “Since (I’ve been) a kid it’s been a lifelong goal and a dream of mine, I’m just so thankful,” Henry said. This season, Henry rushed for 1,986 yards, the sixth-highest rushing total of any back who won the Heisman and the most since Ron Dayne in…

Heisman finalists do not include FSU runner Dalvin Cook

in Sports/Top Headlines by

As good as FSU’s Dalvin Cook was this year, he is not among the three players listed as Heisman Trophy candidates. Nor is LSU’s Leonard Fournette. Nor Navy’s Keenan Reynolds. In one of the most competitive Heisman races ever, the finalists are Clemson’s DeShaun Watson, Stanford’s Christian McCafferty and Alabama’s Derrick Henry. Five straight quarterbacks have won the award, which would lean toward Watson, whose team is unbeaten. Henry’s team has one loss. McCafferty’s team is the only one that…

Florida has faced good backs, but ‘Bama’s Derrick Henry may be the best

in Sports/Top Headlines by

Want to know who ought to vote for the Heisman? Antonio Morrison, that’s who. And Jon Bullard. And Keanu Neal. And Vernon Hargreaves. And Bryan Cox Jr. And all the rest of the Florida Gators. In the year of the running back, it all went through them. Leonard Fournette. Then Dalvin Cook. Now Derrick Henry. Think about it: If Georgia’s Nick Chubb hadn’t been injured, the Gators would have faced the first-, second- and fifth-rated running backs in the nation.…
