Florida House adds homeless to hate crimes law

From the 13th Juror: Despite one state representative calling the homeless “bums,” the Florida House has passed a bill that would add the homeless to the state’s hate crime law. Sponsored by Rep. Federal Judge Steven Merryday has tossed out nine allegations in a federal lawsuit that accuses St. Petersburg of violating the rights of homeless people by enforcing a series of ordinances, scoring what appears to be a major victory for the city. An elderly, possibly homeless man was struck and killed as he crossed West Columbus Drive on Friday night, Tampa police say. According to a report, the man was crossing in the middle of the 2900 block about 8:30 p.m. when he stepped in front of a 2006 Ford Escape driven by Christopher Cano, 26.
