Barack Obama, Warriors star Stephen Curry team up on PSA

in Sports/Top Headlines by

President Barack Obama has teamed with reigning NBA MVP Stephen Curry on a public service announcement calling for Americans to mentor youth in their community to make a positive impact. The video was shown Saturday on ABC’s “NBA Countdown” ahead of Curry’s playoff opener with the defending champion Golden State Warriors against the Houston Rockets on Saturday. Curry and Obama golfed together last August and Curry also visited the White House with the Warriors in February — and Obama mentioned…

Magic survive Houston scoring runs, score 104-101 victory

The Orlando Magic defeated the Houston Rockets 104-101 on Wednesday night at the Amway Center. It was a game they most likely would not have won a year ago. Orlando survived two big runs from the Rockets to come away with a hard-earned victory. One of those runs came in the fourth quarter, when a probable win became very much in doubt. Orlando jumped out to a 20-10 lead halfway through the first quarter on jumper by Nikola Vucevic. James…

I couldn’t be happier this morning, after staying up until midnight last night to see my lifelong basketball team, the Golden State Warriors, defeat the Houston Rockets,  and advance to the NBA Finals for the first time since 1975. If one of the prerequisites for being a politician is engaging in a…

Mitch Perry Report for 5.20.15 — The end of an era

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

Good morning everyone. I’m getting off to a slightly later start than usual this morning, as I stayed up near midnight last night to see the Golden State Warriors defeat the Houston Rockets in a very exciting opening game of the Western Conference NBA Finals. As was the case while watching another Warrior playoff game last Friday night, I also caught a little of “The Late Show” with David Letterman, which I think you may have heard ends its run on CBS…

Happy Birthday (belatedly) to St. Petersburg Times’ best writer, Eric Deggans

In basketball, there are players so talented that they can win games without ever touching the ball. Coaches sometimes have a difficult time finding a place for them on the court, yet when they are in the game, they so clearly make everyone else around them better that it is foolish to keep them on the bench. Shane Battier, the mercurial forward on the Houston Rockets, is this kind of player, so much so that he was featured in this…
