Eleven things I think I think about the Tampa Bay Times’ endorsements in state House races

in Peter by

Let’s put aside for a moment the argument about whether newspaper endorsements matter much in modern campaigns. Even if not a single likely voter was swayed by the opinions of editorial boards, the endorsements still matter because they matter to the candidates themselves. That’s why you see even the most Republican of candidates — with their national standard-bearer whipping his supporters into a frenzy against the media — touting the support of their local newspaper. The Tampa Bay Times, the state’s…

Mitch Perry Report for 10.12.16 – Is there still no crying in baseball?

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

It’s painful today for me, folks. I stayed up past midnight this morning to see the Chicago Cubs come from behind with four runs in the top of the ninth inning to defeat the San Francisco Giants, 6-5, and advance to the National League Championship Series this weekend, where they’ll play either Washington D.C. or Los Angeles. When I was a kid in the 1970’s, baseball was my favorite sport, just like it was America’s. But over the course of…

Jackie Toledo gets Florida GOP funds in HD 60 race, but Democrat David Singer has more cash

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

The Republican Party of Florida is doing a lot to make sure House District 60 stays in Republican control after next month’s election. The RPOF gave more than $26,000 in in-kind and direct financial contributions to Jackie Toledo in September. More than $16,000 of that was for a poll. Another $1,500 was for staffing, and there was a separate $10,000 financial contribution on Sept. 30. Meanwhile, though there have been reports the Florida Democratic Party would come to David Singer’s aid financially, that…

Happy Columbus Day, for those few of you who actually get to observe (i.e. take off) the federal holiday. And a simple request today? Can we just end this sad presidential election now and not wait the remaining 29 days? Well, hardly anyone has voted, so that won’t work. Nevertheless, that presidential debate Sunday night — specifically the first 30 minutes, were unbelievably sad and depressing. Exciting? Yeah, like waiting for a car crash to happen. Okay, where is this race…

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

Jackie Toledo, the Republican nominee in House District 60, released a statement Saturday afternoon, calling the incredibly lewd comments made by Donald Trump in 2005 that surfaced in a video Friday “unacceptable.” “The vulgar remarks of Donald Trump are unacceptable and have no place in our country,” Toledo said. “They are the absolute opposite of how I’ve raised my sons to treat women and how I expect boys to treat my daughters. “While our presidential candidates continue to disappoint, it is more important than ever to…

Democrats throughout Florida call on GOP opponents to denounce #TrumpTapes vulgar comments

A newly released videotape showing Donald Trump making crude comments about a married woman he tried to seduce is sending shock waves throughout Florida politics. “I’ve said some foolish things,” the Republican presidential nominee said overnight Friday in a taped apology posted on Facebook. “But there’s a big difference between the words and actions of other people. Bill Clinton has actually abused women.” But Florida Democratic candidates statewide are not letting Trump off the hook so easily. Nearly all of them are…
