Where Deveron Gibbons got his money

in The Bay and the 'Burg by

I went to FSU, so I’m not that great at math, so forgive me if I messed up the numbers a bit. It’s clear to me that Deveron Gibbons raised more than 75K from out-of-town donors. I’d be a hypocrite to say I wouldn’t like to see Jamie Bennett take in as much money as possible, but that much dough from outside of St. Pete should raise alarm bells.

in The Bay and the 'Burg by

Jamie Bennett’s mayoral campaign took in more than $30,000 in cash and in-kind contributions during the most recent quarter of the fundraising calendar. The period began with Bennett’s formal entrance into the race on January 16 and ended on March 31. According to treasurer Bill Boots, who is finalizing the report, we raised $30,918.47 in cash and in-kind contributions. “Our fundraising effort demonstrates the viability of my campaign,” Bennett said. “Along with being the first candidate to collect the 1,000…

Monday’s Mayoral Wrap-up

in Peter/The Bay and the 'Burg by

The first fundraising deadline came and went last week and all of the major campaigns (I’ll get to that distinction in a moment) are still holding their collective breaths, waiting to see each others’ numbers. Of course, the local media is ready to write their horserace stories about which pony got out of the gate fastest. And yet, the same media that bemoans the presence of so much money in politics can’t help but write article after article about nothing…

Mayoral candidate Jamie Bennett is submitting more than 1,000 signed petitions to place his name on the upcoming ballot to run for Mayor. Bennett’s is the first campaign to collect and turn in the requisite number of signed petitions to qualify for the primary. “It wasn’t easy collecting so many petitions,” said Bennett, “but I believe we have the hardest-working, most-organized campaign and this effort is a testament to that.” Bennett said he and his volunteers have spent the last…

Deveron Gibbons knocked off Housing Authority

in The Bay and the 'Burg by

Mayoral candidate Deveron Gibbons had the wind knocked out of him yesterday when his supposed patron Governor Charlie Crist declined to re-appoint Gibbons to the Pinellas County Housing Authority, the bread and butter of Deveron’s political clout. This is one of those under-the-radar stories important to mostly insiders, but I can’t stress enough the magnitude of this slight. If Deveron’s campaign was already wobbly after the revelation of his checkered driving record, then he has to be on the floor…

Where are the candidates for City Council?

in The Bay and the 'Burg by

Around St. Petersburg’s City Hall, you can’t step over a homeless person without bumping into someone running for Mayor. With Larry Williams throwing his hat in the ring last week, there are currently nine people hoping to replace Rick Baker. Being a candidate for mayor is the only job sector in town that’s a growth industry. Where then are all the candidates for St. Petersburg City Council? There are five seats up for grabs this year, and currently there are…
