in Statewide/Top Headlines by

The Florida Taxicab Association issued another broadside against Uber on Tuesday, this time focusing on a new University of South Florida-Nielsen poll that suggests most Floridians are in favor of legal restrictions on so-called transportation network companies. According to the new poll released Tuesday, 89 percent of Floridians believe ride-sharing companies like Uber and Lyft “should be required to have liability insurance as is required by current state law.” The level of insurance TNCs must carry has been a major sticking point between them and both Florida…

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

St. Petersburg-based state Sen. Jeff Brandes has stated his opposition to the Hillsborough County Public Transportation Commission (PTC) for years, so you wouldn’t think that the GOP lawmaker would entertain any discussions about strengthening the besieged agency.  However, PTC Chairman Victor Crist says the two have more in common than Brandes is aware of. “Senator Brandes is a hard-working, dedicated legislator,” Crist said after Wednesday’s PTC meeting, where his board voted to stop citing Uber and Lyft drivers for operating illegally…

AFP airs ads thanking GOP lawmakers for refusing to expand health care in Florida

in Statewide/Top Headlines by

The Florida Legislature’s failure last week to come to an agreement on redrawing the state’s congressional maps was just the latest example of state Republicans unable to come together. A battle over Medicaid expansion roiled the Legislature for most of its Regular Session this spring. Nearly everyone in the state Senate supported proposals that would have expanded Medicaid and provided health care coverage to hundreds of thousands of low-income residents, but the House of Representatives remained resolute in its opposition. And despite…

Jeff Brandes says he’s had enough, and will propose legislation to kill the Hillsborough County PTC

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

Jeff Brandes says he’s mad as hell, and doesn’t want to take it anymore. The St. Petersburg-based Republican state senator wrote on his Facebook page on Thursday that he will propose legislation next year that will attempt to eliminate the Hillsborough County Public Transportation Commission. His statement comes a day after the controversial agency announced that despite the fact that a Hillsborough judge had denied its request for a preliminary injunction against Uber last week, it would continue to write tickets citing Uber and Lyft drivers…
