in Statewide/Top Headlines by

Florida state Sen. In a letter to Florida’s Office of Insurance Regulation Commissioner Kevin McCarty Wednesday, Brandes argued there were 100,000 fewer flood insurance policies in effect this June compared to last May. Homeowners face as much as 25 percent rate increases each year for non-primary residences and…

in Statewide/Top Headlines by

The Florida arm of the conservative advocacy group Americans for Prosperity has issued its annual legislative scorecard, which ranks state legislators based on their propensity to vote “pro-economic freedom.” The group graded all 160 state lawmakers based on their votes on economic issues. Dana Young for Florida Senate?

in Statewide/Top Headlines by

If things break as the Florida Supreme Court has foreshadowed, House Majority Leader Dana Young might be headed to the state Senate. Grant, for his part, has raised $25 ahead of his 2016 re-election campaign. Grant has faced real primary heat in the past: local attorney Miriam Steinberg won the endorsement of the Tampa Bay Times and 41 percent of…

Jeb Bush is in San Francisco today, where he plans on hailing an Uber to show his support for the ride-sharing company. His appearance comes a day after California regulators required the company to pay a $7.3 million fine and hand over required information about safety and accessibility — or be shut down in their home state. The California Public Utilities Commission, which regulates taxis and shuttle companies, asked Uber, Lyft and Sidecar to report the number of customers requesting rides in vehicles that can…

Is Jack Latvala predicting Supreme Court will call for redrawing state Senate seats in 2016?

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

Florida’s political world was shaken on Thursday after the state Supreme Court ruled that the GOP-led Legislature had gerrymandered eight congressional districts, and called on the Legislature to remedy the situation before the 2016 election. Still to come, however, is a court ruling on a separate 2012 lawsuit filed by the League of Women Voters and Common Cause challenging the constitutionality of 28 of the 40 state Senate districts drawn up by the Legislature. And if one can read the…
