St. Petersburg City Council committee discusses the difference between nude clubs and bikini bars

in The Bay and the 'Burg by

Creative Loafing follows up on a story I first wrote about a couple weeks ago: The St Petersburg City Council Public Services and Infrastructure Committee (PSI) met Thursday morning in part to address a concern about the bikini bars that have recently appeared in St. Petersburg. Council member Jeff Danner referred the discussion, which sought to define the difference between a nude club and a bikini club in order to best regulate the new bikini clubs in the area. After four…

City Councilman Jeff Danner wants to know the difference between an ‘adult use’ venue and a ‘bikini bar’

in Peter/Statewide by

It’s a question that has perplexed me for years: what is the difference between an “adult use” venue and a “bikini bar”? Try as I may to determine the difference — and I have invested considerable time and money into determining the difference between an “”adult use” venue and a “bikini bar” — I am hard pressed to explain the differences. Fortunately, St. Petersburg City Councilman Jeff Danner is determined to get to the bottom of this vexing issue.  Today,…

10 things I think I think about Bill Foster’s first 100 days in office

in Peter/The Bay and the 'Burg by

This week will mark the end of Bill Foster’s first 100 days as Mayor of St. Petersburg.  Here’s what I think of Mayor Foster’s first three months in office: 1.  So let me get this straight, Foster’s first three major personnel decisions have been to retain Goliath Davis, to eliminate five Park Ranger positions at Boyd Hill Nature Trail and to hire his former campaign manager for a $50,000 a year position. 2.  Foster is said to have narrowed the list…

St. Pete officials approve red light cameras

in The Bay and the 'Burg by

The City Council voted 7-1 today to install cameras at intersections to fine motorists who don’t stop at red lights, hearing little opposition from the public and citing few specific studies that showed this was an effective way to reduce crashes. “The research is very simple,” said Council member Bill Dudley. “Sit in your car and watch. There’s so much data out there that says it’s not a good thing. Running red lights is a form of disaster.” Council member…

Images from Election 2009

in The Bay and the 'Burg by

Those running for elected office in St. Petersburg were subjected to attending a gauntlet of sparsely-attended candidate forums, such as this one in Midtown. Not counting the candidates and their entourages, fewer than two dozen residents bothered to attend the meeting — about the same number of people who attended most of these events. In the run-up to the 2009 Municipal Elections, the City Council’s decision to vacate the sidewalk outside of BayWalk became a national story after a fight broke…
