Jeremy Ring also floating run for Governor in 2018

in Statewide/Top Headlines by

U.S. Rep. Gwen Graham rocked the Democratic side of Florida politics with her announcement Thursday morning she’s “seriously considering” a run for governor. But of course, she won’t be alone in seeking to take back the Governor’s Mansion for the Dems for the first time since Gov. Lawton Chiles held the state’s highest post in 1998. Margate Sen. Jeremy Ring said Thursday morning he’ll throw his hat in the ring as well. “No door is closed for me. I am considering it, yes, and am in…

in Statewide/Top Headlines by

A man who was escorted out of a Senate committee hearing last week was arrested by Capitol police Wednesday and charged with trespassing and resisting an officer, both misdemeanors. Antonio Ringo Davis, 35, of no fixed address, was booked into the Leon County Jail, where he remained Wednesday morning. Dead again: Senators kill anti-LGBT discrimination bill

in Statewide/Top Headlines by

A motion to reconsider a contentious bill banning discrimination against LGBT people failed in a Senate panel Tuesday, signaling its virtual demise for the 2016 Legislative Session. Aaron Bean, Lizbeth Benacquisto, Jeff Brandes, Wilton Simpson and Kelli Stargel, all Republicans, still opposed the bill. In favor were committee Chairman Miguel Diaz de…

A bill to prohibit gender- and sexuality-based workplace discrimination died momentarily in a Senate panel on judicial affairs, before being brought back to life by legislative maneuvering. Monday afternoon’s meeting of the Senate Judiciary Committee was likely the most controversial of 2016, in both form and in substance. Senators took up SB 120, a bill supporters are calling the “Competitive Workforce Act,” which aims to amend the state’s Civil Rights Act to prohibit employment, retail and other discrimination against people because of…

Anti-corruption bill faces rocky path in Legislature

in Statewide/Top Headlines by

A major ethics and anti-corruption bill that advocates say is long overdue – but critics say may go too far – faces a rocky path in the Legislature. The legislation seeks to end what a 2010 grand jury called a “corruption tax” on Florida citizens amounting to millions a year in extra taxes, government fees and even highway tolls to make up for the waste, fraud and misconduct by public officials. The grand jury, sought by former Gov. Charlie Crist…

Public corruption bill hits snag amid senators’ furor

in Statewide/Top Headlines by

An anti-corruption bill with roots in the editorial department of a newspaper hit a snag in a Senate panel Monday, after a protracted debate over specific provisions and about the proper role of the news media momentarily killed it. Former Senate President Don Gaetz is carrying SB 582, a bill which began as a proposal by the Florida-based Gannett chain of newspapers and Florida Today public interest columnist Matt Reed. The measure’s early adopters says it would prevent “bid-rigging” and other corrupt practices by adding…

in Apolitical by

Today on Context Florida: Hunger is a complex problem, says Robin Safley. In order to solve it, we must understand the underlying issues and apply comprehensive solutions to assist those in need. We know that access to a consistent supply of nutritious food is critical to the underlying health of our families and the academic achievement of our children.
