Mitch Perry Report for 8.7.15 — The morning after

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

Last night was the most fun I can remember watching a political debate since Chris Matthews moderated the Charlie Crist-Jim Davis-Max Linn Florida gubernatorial debate in 2006. Anyone remember that? Let’s face it, if the same tough questions were asked by moderators at MSNBC, CNN, Univision or any of the major broadcast networks, the story of the morning (besides whatever Donald Trump did) from Republicans would be how unfair the liberal media was. As it stands, some conservatives on my Twitter…

Mitch Perry Report for 8.4.15 — Political speed-date dialing in Manchester

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

Fourteen Republican candidates for president met last night at Saint Anselm College in Manchester, N.H. It was the equivalent of political speed-dating, and none of them on stage were named Donald Trump. (By the way, do those things happen anymore? I did it twice in the early aughts, and what I remember from the experience was  how weary I was after standing up and moving to another table every three minutes.) Upshot? From this reporter’s perspective sitting on a couch in Tampa’s V.M. Ybor…

GOP hopefuls take on illegal immigration in debate preview

in 2017/Top Headlines by

The Republican Party’s presidential class called for aggressive steps to curb illegal immigration, seizing on a delicate political issue as more than a dozen White House hopefuls faced off in New Hampshire on Monday night for a pointed preview of the first full-fledged debate of the 2016 primary season. All but three of the 17 major Republican candidates for president participated in what was essentially a debate lite, which – unlike Thursday’s nationally televised debate in Cleveland – didn’t have…

Donald Trump leads by 23 points in South Carolina in new poll

in 2017/Top Headlines by

Donald Trump’s endless summer of bliss at the polls continues to show no signs of dying out anytime soon. Last week he took the lead in a Florida poll for the first time, and a new Gravis Marketing poll released on Monday night that has him with a huge lead in South Carolina, the first state in the South that will vote in next year’s Republican primaries. Trump has 34 percent in the new poll. That’s three times the lead over the…

Mitch Perry Report for 8.3.15 — Forget Thursday. 14 GOP prez candidates debate tonight in NH

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

Happy Monday, which, if you live or work in Tampa, means another perilous morning for actually driving your car, as it’s raining hard once again as I write this (6:18 a.m.). This weekend’s storms and floods indicate that Tampa may never become the major city it aspires to; though there are plans to raise taxes to pay for stormwater projects this year, the conventional wisdom laid down by geologists and past and present mayors of Tampa is that the way that the…

Donald Trump leads GOP field in yet another national poll

in 2017/Top Headlines by

Donald Trump continues to lead the Republican presidential field of candidates just days before the first major debate of the political season, leading with 19 percent support in a new NBC News/Wall Street Journal poll. He’s followed by Scott Walker at 15 percent, and Jeb Bush third at 14 percent. All other Republican candidates earn single digit backing. Texas Sen. Ted Cruz is favored by 9 percent of primary voters; former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee and Kentucky Sen. Rand Paul are tied…
