Deborah Tamargo re-elected as Hillsborough GOP chief

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

Deborah Tamargo has won re-election as chair of the Hillsborough County Republican Party. Tamargo withstood a challenge from Jonny Torres, the second vice chairman of the party, winning 94-58 over Torres on Tuesday night at the party’s reorganization meeting at MOSI in North Tampa. Torres ran an insurgent campaign against Tamargo, who was narrowly elected in 2014 over former chair Debbie Cox-Roush. He claimed party membership and interest had dropped in recent years, and that local candidates weren’t really helped by the REC in…

Mitch Perry Report for 12.16.16 — Friday follies

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

Good morning to you all on this, the last Friday MPR I’ll be filing in 2016 … Good news for those of us on the Affordable Care Act: While the GOP-led House of Representative promise to repeal the ACA within the first 100 days of the Trump administration, the date that the provisions of the act will be delayed, according to a report in today’s New York Times, by as “short as two years or as long as three or four years.”…

Deb Tamargo battles Jonny Torres for future control of Hillsborough County Republican Party

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

November 8 was a pretty great night for Florida Republicans. For the first time since 2004, the Sunshine State went red in the presidential race; Marco Rubio easily won re-election in his race for the U.S. Senate. And despite the redistricting of every state Senate seat, the GOP lost no seats in the Legislature’s upper chamber. One not so bright place for the GOP was in Hillsborough County, where Hillary Clinton won decisively against Donald Trump, putting a dent into the county’s reputation as a reliable bellwether for the presidential race.…

Pinellas GOP, Democrats poised to elect party leaders this Monday night

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

When it comes to drama with their upcoming party reorganization meetings taking place next week, Pinellas County Republicans and Democrats have nothing on their Hillsborough County brethren. This coming Monday night, the local executive committees for the Republican and Democratic Parties in Pinellas County will be voting for their party leaders, and in both cases, it doesn’t appear to be many changes at hand – at least not yet. Pinellas Democratic Executive Committee Chair Susan McGrath is running to serve a second…

Run-off elections prove fruitful for Tampa Democrats for second straight year

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

Somewhat lost in the tumult over the infighting within the Hillsborough County Democratic Executive Committee this week is the fact that for the second time in less than two years, a Democrat has been elected to the Tampa City Council in a run-off election after finishing a distant second in the initial election. Luis Viera’s win by 63 votes in the District 7 race  came four weeks after he finished 2,469 votes behind Jim Davison in the Nov.8 general election. “We had…

Jonny Torres to challenge Deb Tamargo for chair of Hillsborough County Republican Executive Committee

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

Jonny Torres, currently vice chair of the Hillsborough County Republican Executive Committee, has announced he will challenge incumbent chair Deborah Tamargo when the party holds elections next month. Although the GOP had a big night nationally and in Florida last week, Torres said the results out of Hillsborough were disappointing, and he believes it’s time for a change in leadership. “Today, we bear little resemblance to the organization we once were,” Torres wrote to party members on Wednesday. “Those of you…

Live-blogging and updates of special election in Florida House District 58

in The Bay and the 'Burg by

I’ll be blogging, and tweeting throughout the day with updates about the primary for the hotly contested special election in Florida House District 58. Five candidates – three Democrats and two Republicans – are in a sprint to gain voters’ favor to represent the district, which covers West Tampa, Town ‘N Country, the West Shore business corridor and Seminole Heights. The seat opened when Rep. Michael Scionti, D-Tampa, said on Dec. 7 he was taking a job with the Obama…
