St. Pete City Council agrees to Rays deal more than double the previous MOU

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

St. Pete City Council approved a new version of a deal to let the Tampa Bay Rays look for possible stadium sites outside of St. Petersburg. Two deals were on the table during a special meeting Thursday — one from chair Charlie Gerdes, the other from Jim Kennedy. The Kennedy plan was approved by a 5-3 vote. Gerdes, Darden Rice and Amy Foster voted against it. Under Kennedy’s plan, the Rays would have to pay St. Pete $4 million a…

Perennial GOP candidate Sharon Russ files in HD 70 race

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

Republican activist and perpetual candidate Sharon Russ filed to run for the heavily Democratic House District 70 seat held by termed-out state Rep. Daryl Rouson. Russ is no stranger to politics, at least in the Pinellas County portion of the district: she ran for St. Petersburg mayor in 2009 and challenged Karl Nurse for City Council in 2013, but her campaigns nosedived. Russ never made the ballot in the mayoral race, and lost to Nurse 69-18 in the three-way Republican…

Florida is home to more registered boats than any other of the 28 states evaluated in a study released Thursday by the group Environment Florida. The “Summer Fun Index” compiled by the group’s research and policy center shows that more than 37 million people visit the Sunshine State’s waterways each year. “There’s nothing quite like boating in Tampa Bay,” said Jennifer Rubiello, the state director for Environment Florida. In addition to having a boat load of, well, boats, Florida also…

It was a hard-fought victory for historic preservation supporters, who had worked for years to get the city to change the previous ordinance…

Karl Nurse inquiry prompts negative Will Newton report

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

St. Pete City Councilmember Karl Nurse prompted a report questioning a City Council’s candidate’s ability to reach consensus if he serves on council. The Lisa Wheeler-Brown campaign has been fighting hard to maintain its footing in the race to replace Wengay Newton. Her opponent is his brother, Will Newton. Earlier this week, the Tampa Bay Times reported that Will Newton had an unimpressive track record as a bargainer for the city’s firefighter union. Of the four bargaining impasses over 10 years,…

Karl Nurse, Darden Rice reiterate support for Lisa Wheeler-Brown

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

Lisa Wheeler-Brown supporters are sticking by her side despite a barrage of controversy surrounding recent changes to campaign finance records. Supporters of Wheeler-Brown’s campaign are calling the allegations petty and point to a riff between current campaign consultants and one who previously worked on her campaign. While campaign supporters and volunteers have rallied behind their candidate on social media responses to a questionable expenditure for dental work, misreporting on that expense and late-filed amendments showing in-kind contributions previously unreported, there…

Will Newton continues to surge with campaign cash

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

St. Pete City Council candidate Will Newton continues to close the gap between fundraising numbers in his matchup against Lisa Wheeler-Brown in a five-way race for the District 7 seat. Newton has raised about $8,000 less than Wheeler-Brown to date with $21,565 in total contributions. Wheeler-Brown has brought in $29,411. But Newton’s past two reports, including the most recent, show he is surging in fundraising efforts while hers has tapered off. Newton raised $8,395 during the latest reporting period running…
