10 things I think I think about today’s paper

in The Bay and the 'Burg by

Alright, so this is a new daily feature I am launching (my blogging needs a little discipline) called 10 things I think I think about today’s paper, the paper, in this case being the St. Petersburg Times. I have a love-hate relationship with the Times. I love the newspaper, but the newspaper hates me. Because the conventional wisdom is never get into a fight with those who buy ink by the barrel, I don’t want this to be viewed as…

St. Pete posts treasurers’ reports online

in The Bay and the 'Burg by

Thanks to a nudge from Karl Nurse and, perhaps, a little blogging of my own, the City of St. Petersburg is now publishing online the campaign treasurers’ reports from all of the candidates running this year. The reports are only in PDF format, so you can’t search a database as you can on the Florida Division of Elections’ website, but this is a good first step.

Where are the candidates for City Council?

in The Bay and the 'Burg by

Around St. Petersburg’s City Hall, you can’t step over a homeless person without bumping into someone running for Mayor. With Larry Williams throwing his hat in the ring last week, there are currently nine people hoping to replace Rick Baker. Vistorious from the battle over the stimulus package, Meek delivered a reassuring message about what will be done next in Washington.

Online reporting of campaign contributions gets the go-ahead from the city clerk’s office

in Peter/The Bay and the 'Burg by

One of the first projects I went to work on after returning to St. Petersburg was to ask the city to make available online the campaign treasurers’ reports detailing the contributions and expenditures of all the candidates running for city government. I wrote an open letter to Councilman Karl Nurse asking him and his colleagues “to instruct the City Clerk’s office to develop an online system that provides all of the information found on the Campaign Treasurers’ report, including all…

Update on Nurse’s effort to ‘fortify’ stores

in The Bay and the 'Burg by

I first wrote about this issue here after talking with Karl Nurse about this problem. There will be a council workshop to discuss the matter on February 12. From this article in the Times: Install surveillance cameras and a recording system inside the store — and make sure they work. Clear away signs and anything else that might keep the register from being seen from the outside. Police say that is what owners need to do to fortify their stores…

Karl Nurse calls for clear windows at stores

in The Bay and the 'Burg by

St. Petersburg council member Karl Nurse wants the city to require gas stations and convenience stores to remove all window signs in the wake of a series of violent store robberies. Without the poster advertisements, there is a greater chance criminals could be seen from the street during robbery attempts, Nurse said. For years, the Police Department has advised store owners to remove the signs, with little success. The council voted Thursday to discuss a potential ordinance in a future…
