City Council candidates at Tiger Bay today

in The Bay and the 'Burg by

The two races for St. Petersburg City Council District 5 and 6 seats each share common elements. They both contain economically and racially diverse areas of the City with some of the most valuable, and most economically troubled real estate. They also feature open, or nearly open, seats as opposed to other districts where the incumbents are fairly securely entrenched. But the most interesting element each shares is the field of candidates. Each has a presumed front-runner. In District 5…

in The Bay and the 'Burg by

Is this going to be one of the new trends this election season, in which organizations explain their endorsements? Sierra Club explained why it endorsed Scott Wagman for St. Petersburg Mayor; now the Pinellas Realtors are explaining (albeit with several spelling errors I had to correct) the endorsement they made last week in the City Council races: District 2: James Kennedy – Kennedy earned the committee’s recommendation because of his commitment to growth management planning as well as his overall…

Karl Nurse vs. The Tomato Cans

Last Sunday, Bill Safire wrote in his “On Language” column about the use of “Straw Man” in political speechifying, in which you set someone up just to knock them down. Safire uses President Obama as an example when he says “I know some folks in Washington and on Wall Street are saying we should just focus on their problems.” Some folks, like those who are never named but are always wrongheaded extremists. Straw Men lurk everywhere in St. Petersburg politics.…

Two best websites may be from City Council candidates, not mayoral contenders

in The Bay and the 'Burg by

Of the 22 individuals crazy enough to run for elected office in St. Petersburg, the two with perhaps the best websites are candidates for City Council, rather than the better-funded candidates for Mayor. Well, mayoral candidate Scott Wagman has the best website, with plenty of YouTube videos. But at an expense of $20K, the cost of Wagman’s website far exceeds its value. Jamie Bennett had a good-looking, workhorse of a website, loaded with several active blogs. But since I left…
