in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

Former Hillsborough County Commissioner Jim Norman began his return to public office in September with solid fundraising. On Friday, Norman’s campaign announced raising $84,000 for his inaugural month. “When we started this campaign, we reached out immediately to close friends and family for support,” Norman said in a statement. “I’m incredibly humbled by the level of support we’ve received and just how passionate people are about bringing effective leadership to the County Commission” Norman said he was “humbled” by the…

Hillsborough County closer to establishing registry for lobbyists

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

Although somewhat obscured by the more than 90-minute discussion they had on the Go Hillsborough initiative, the Board of County Commissioners on Wednesday unanimously supported a proposal by Chairwoman Sandy Murman aimed at bringing more transparency to lobbying in the county. The measure calls for the County Attorney’s office to draft an ordinance that will create a  system requiring lobbyists to register when they visit with county officials or staff, with that information then being posted online. Still to be determined…

Mitch Perry Report for 10.8.15 — Will the Hillsborough BOCC have the votes to put transportation tax on ballot?

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

Watching the Hillsborough County Commission yesterday discuss the latest with the Go Hillsborough effort was a fascinating glimpse of where this experience may be heading. The headline was that the Board of County Commissioners beat back a feeble attempt to remove Sheriff David Gee’s office from investigating the charges on how consultant Parsons Brinckerhoff  received its $1.35 million contract to lead the effort on transportation that the county has been undertaking the past two years. The board also rejected Commissioner Stacy White’s call…

The Board of Hillsborough County Commissioners on Wednesday reaffirmed that they want Sheriff David Gee’s office to conduct an investigation into the contracting out of the Go Hillsborough transportation proposal. They also rejected a proposal by Commissioner Stacy White that would kill the county’s deal with contractor Parsons Brinckerhoff, which was suspended two weeks ago. And they voted to hold a comprehensive review of their transportation options after the next meeting of the Policy Leadership Group taking place on November 5.…

Reacting to media report, Hillsborough County internal auditor to again review Go Hillsborough effort

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

Although there was already a 94-page investigation conducted by Hillsborough County’s internal auditor earlier this year that gave the thumbs up to the county’s contracting of the Go Hillsborough public outreach program with engineering consultant Parsons Brinckerhoff, the Board of County Commission today voted to have internal auditor Peggy Caskey conduct another investigation immediately. The motion by Commissioner Kevin Beckner came two days after a report by WTSP-Channel 10 reporter Noah Pransky that investigated local public relations and communications guru Beth Leytham, and her involvement as…

Tim Schock files to oppose Jim Norman in Hillsborough County GOP District 6 race

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

Jim Norman isn’t the only Republican to enter the increasingly wild Hillsborough County Commission District 6 race today. Tim Schock, who lost a primary challenge to Al Higginbotham in the GOP Primary for the countywide District 7 seat last August, filed today to run for the open seat in 2016. The 42-year-old strategies and operations consultant says that he doesn’t see himself as the “anti” Norman. “I am a new voice experienced in business and experienced in some of the significant issues…

Jim Norman speaks: The former Hillsborough county commissioner is plotting a comeback

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

Former Hillsborough County Commissioner and state Sen. Jim Norman wants you to know one thing — that everything you thought you knew about what happened to him in 2010 is wrong. “The media put a message out there that is just inaccurate, and I’m really burned about that, so I’m pretty fired up with setting the record straight,” he said in an interview conducted earlier this week. In case you’ve forgotten or weren’t around five years ago, “the message” that Norman says…
