Chris Ingram brings the Tiger Bay Club back to relevance

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

At its best, Tiger Bay Club forums held throughout the state can provide a valuable public service as a place where the public can interact with lawmakers, political candidates, activists and journalists who are asked to participate each month. Depending on the topic or the featured speaker, however, these same events can often devolve into dull, scripted events. That’s where the audience of Tiger Bay members get to to play their part in what we have of a democracy, raising questions…

With emotions flaring, Hillsborough County Commission advances potential wage theft ordinance

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

On the face of it, it didn’t look like a very close comparison as the Hillsborough County Commission met on Wednesday to review what type of system they’d like to model a policy shift to try to combat wage-theft in the county, rated in a recent report as the second worst in the entire state. Speaking via Skype from South Florida, Jeanette Smith, executive director of South Florida Interfaith Worker Justice, went through a basic comparison of two of the…

New legislation signed by Gov. Scott could help Hillsborough County with a transit tax in 2016

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

Members involved with two important local agencies got huge news this week. Among the more than three dozen bills that Gov. Rick Scott signed into law on Thursday included a child welfare bill that removes both the Hillsborough County Children’s Board and the Pinellas County Juvenile Welfare Board from having to go before local voters next year in a referendum to essentially fight for their continued existence. Both agencies are currently funded by property taxes, but those taxes aren’t subject to the whims…

Happy Memorial Day Weekend to you all, which by the way is the earliest we can ever have such a holiday, with this Monday only being the 25th of May. Incidentally, Labor Day will take place as late as it can be this year (September 7), which will actually be a factor in delaying the NFL season by a week, meaning the regular season won’t end until next January. If one of the prerequisites for being a politician is engaging in a…

The 53-year-old Hillsborough County native comes with 25 years of experience in local and state environmental policy and business management, and she wasn’t even on the short list recommended by the EPC’s selection committee last month. But the door opened up for her after Scott Emery, the EPC wetland enforcement manager, had to…

Mitch Perry Report for 5.21.15 — A comeback for Rand Paul?

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

It may not have actually been the definition of a filibuster, but Rand Paul worked his ass off last night on the Senate floor yesterday, calling attention to the dangers of the National Security Agency’s surveillance programs. He spoke for 10 and a half hours, beginning at 1:18 p.m. and lasting nearly until midnight, calling it a day at 11:49 p.m. It was the second filibuster or near filibuster that Paul has performed in his first term in the Senate, and…

Hillsborough County Commission meeting gets hot talking wage theft

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

Although every member of the Hillsborough County Commission weighed in this morning regarding their concern about the issue of wage theft in the county, the Republican members’ prescription of how to alleviate the problem drew the wrath of the measure’s proponent, Democrat Kevin Beckner. Beckner said that his colleagues’ worries about growing the size of government outweighed their professed concern for workers losing wages unfairly in the county, and they rejected his proposal, based on a Miami-Dade County ordinance. The issue isn’t dead…
