Record ratings likely on tap for NBA Finals

in Sports/Top Headlines by

For those who missed it, the Golden State Warriors and the Oklahoma City Thunder just completed an NBA playoff series for the ages. There was one highlight after another. TNT earned their highest rating for any program ever as the Warriors completed a rare comeback from a three-games-to-one deficit. Two-time NBA Most Valuable Player Stephen Curry is a big reason for the interest. Curry has the talent to turn curiosity into television viewers. When combined with an almost equally deadly…

Rookie Billy Donovan already a great NBA coach

in Sports/Top Headlines by

Billy Donovan and the Oklahoma City Thunder are doing the impossible. The former Gator and current rookie NBA coach and his players are dominating the defending NBA champion Golden State Warriors in all phases of the game, but especially coaching. The Thunder can advance to the NBA Finals if they can win Game 5 in Oakland on Thursday night. If not, they will have two more chances. Oklahoma City leads the Western Conference Finals three games to one after two…

Mitch Perry Report for 5.23.16 — Why is Mark Cuban being taken so seriously?

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

Well, Mark Cuban looks pretty prescient this morning. The Dallas Mavericks owner told Chuck Todd on NBC’s Meet The Press yesterday that he thinks that the Oklahoma City Thunder will take the NBA title next month. The Thunder look pretty ascendant today after humiliating my Golden State Warriors last night in OKC, and now lead that series 2-1. The winner will likely face LeBron James and the very hungry Cleveland Cavaliers. So what was Cuban even doing on “MTP” anyway? Apparently being asked if…

Raptors throttle Heat with second half blitz

The Toronto Raptors turned it on in the second half on Sunday and won Game 7 of their NBA Eastern Conference semi-final series with the Miami Heat, 116-89. Toronto dominated the boards, protected the ball and aggressively took it to the beleaguered Heat in winning their first conference title. Toronto’s star guards Kyle Lowry and DeMar DeRozan struggled throughout most of the playoffs, but not Sunday. Lowry put up 35 points, seven rebounds and nine assists while DeRozan posted 28…

Mitch Perry Report for 1.19.16 – Sorry, LeBron. Actually not sorry

in Uncategorized by

I know soccer aficionados (somewhat pretentiously) like to call their favorite sport “The Beautiful Game.” As much as I respect that it’s the world’s favorite sport, it ain’t America’s. That would be football. Personally, I would advocate that basketball is actually the most beautiful sport when it’s executed the way the San Antonio Spurs did two years ago in defeating LeBron James and the Miami Heat in the NBA Finals, and what the Golden State Warriors did last year. The Warriors were…

The United States won’t elect a president until next year but the debate over the crowded field of candidates jostling for the Oval Office emerged as the hottest topic on Facebook this year. The race for the Democratic and Republican party nominations eclipsed an outpouring of emotions over deadly attacks, strife, social issues and disasters. The rankings released Wednesday open a window into the cultural mindset by analyzing how frequently specific high-profile events, politicians, entertainers, athletes, movies and TV shows…

We enjoyed Chocolate Thunder’s visit from Lovetron

in Sports/Top Headlines by

Some rims must still rattle from the force of Chocolate Thunder. Some glass backboards have re-emerged in other forms, recycled after their destruction by Darryl Dawkins and others like him. Dawkins died Thursday at the young age of 58 in Allentown, Pa. He left behind a highlight reel of dunks that earned him the Chocolate Thunder nickname as well as a basketball encyclopedia indexing nearly all of them by name. He was a unique character, who at 7 feet also…
