St. Pete offering lien amnesty program

in The Bay and the 'Burg by

St. Petersburg property owners with delinquent special assessment liens on their properties could receive relief through a new Special Assessments Lien Amnesty program. There are hundreds of property owners who have outstanding liens, assessed generally for neglect of a private property that required the city to secure an unsafe structure, demolish a nuisance property or clear debris from private lots. Through a new program adopted by City Council today, a property owner with an outstanding special assessment lien could pay…

Leslie Curran emerging as ‘voice of opposition’ to Bill Foster’s City Hall

in The Bay and the 'Burg by

Ouch. Ouch. OUCH! As much as it pains me to write this – ouch! – City Councilmember Leslie Curran is emerging as a counterweight, if not the voice of opposition, to Mayor Bill Foster’s City Hall, a suprising development considering that Curran and Foster are both Republicans from the same part of town who share similar worldviews. Yet, since becoming Chair of the City Council, Curran’s frustration with some of Foster’s heavy-handedness is becoming apparent. Consider this exchange during a…

ABC Coalition urges St. Pete to reconsider Rays stadium report

in The Bay and the 'Burg by

The chairman of the group researching a possible new Rays stadium location sent a letter to city leaders, urging them to re-consider a meeting. Two weeks ago, Mayor Bill Foster and City Council chair Leslie Curran said they would not meet with the ABC Coalition after it put the finishing touches on its final report. The Coalition was commissioned in 2008 to researching the long-term feasibility of baseball in Tampa Bay. But after it started including areas of Hillsborough County…

It’s not the party, it’s the after-party

in The Bay and the 'Burg by

Campaign after-parties are for me what weddings are for most other people…the best place to get laid without having to pay. Here’s the rundown of where the candidates will be: Mayoral candidate Bill Foster will finish his campaign where it all began: at Ferg’s Sports Bar at 1320 Central Avenue (check out Ferg’s great website here). City Council candidate Jim Kennedy will also be at Ferg’s. Not that I have been invited, but Kathleen Ford is hosting her Election Night…

Agenda 2010’s Bizarro World straw poll

in The Bay and the 'Burg by

My favorite rabble-rouser Gypsy Gallardo helped organize a forum of the St. Petersburg City Council candidates, during which a straw poll was held to, supposedly, gauge the favorites of the African-American community. And like the Bizarro World in which up is down and black is white, most of the winners of the Bizarro Straw Poll are the candidates who will probably lose. And even those candidates who might win, the results are so lopsided, that only Bizarro Superman could make…
