Mike Fasano op-ed on Richard Corcoran: ‘A finer public servant would be hard to find’

in Statewide/Top Headlines by

My good friend Speaker-Designate Richard Corcoran is poised to take over the reins of the Florida House of Representatives for the 2016-2018 term. I’ve known Richard for more than 30 years. A finer public servant would be hard to find. He has the skills, abilities and Tallahassee “know-how” to be an effective leader. He knows how to “get the job done.” Richard is also a committed family man whose wife and six children are truly his pride and joy. His…

Don’t go roping Will Weatherford into the Florida Senate’s mess, Andy Gardiner

in Statewide/Top Headlines by

Thursday was a another wild day in the Florida Capitol, and particularly for the Senate, which seemed for a moment to have adopted a “not one damn” comma approach to its tweaks to the congressional “base map” drawn by staff earlier this month. Hours before, a story by the Miami Herald’s Mary Ellen Klas again stoked the fires of senatorial map-making malpractice. The article detailed new depositions and court documents related to the shadow redistricting process undertaken by the chamber, complete with inappropriate communications between…

Debuting this week: Second edition of INFLUENCE Magazine (link to digital version inside)

in Apolitical/Top Headlines by

Well, that happened. The first issue of INFLUENCE Magazine hit the streets March 3 and, with all humility, was a smashing success. Ten thousand copies of the first edition made their way into the hands of lobbyists in Tallahassee, fundraisers in South Florida, major donors in Naples, and so many other political aficionados throughout the rest of the state. Media outlets, including POLITICO, Business Insider, and the network of Business Journals all took note. I even personally delivered several dozen copies to law offices and PR…

Dean Cannon deserves some credit, too, for House’s redistricting success

in Statewide/Top Headlines by

There’s little doubt that if there is any “winner” emerging from our long state nightmare, the case of the redistricting that just wouldn’t end, it is the Florida House. After all, as the Florida Supreme Court said back in 2012 — and as the memo announcing a third special session forcefully reaffirmed — the maps the House drew contained the only boundaries that got out of the dysfunctional 2011 process intact. House Speaker Will Weatherford even got the coveted plaudit of “shining…

Alan Grayson & Patrick Murphy in a virtual tie in new Dem Senate poll

in 2017/Top Headlines by

The Democratic U.S. Senate race in Florida is a statistical tie, some 13 months before the primary election, according to a new poll. Orlando U.S. Rep. Alan Grayson gets 33 percent and Jupiter U.S. Rep. Patrick Murphy 32 percent in the Mason-Dixon Polling & Research survey published this morning in POLITICO by reporter Marc Caputo. That’s good news for Grayson, whose stock has risen by 19 percentage points since the two candidates were polled by Mason-Dixon in April. Murphy’s numbers were up also, from 22 to 32…

New poll has Jeb Bush up big over Marco Rubio in Florida

in 2017/Top Headlines by

Jeb Bush leads Marco Rubio 28 to 16 percent in Florida in a Mason-Dixon poll released today via Politico’s Marc Caputo. That’s a significant drop-off in support for Rubio in Florida. In a previous survey conducted by Mason-Dixon nearly three months ago, the two Miami-Dade County residents were virtually tied, with Bush up 31-30 percent over Rubio. The biggest benefactor of Rubio’s drop in Florida appears to be Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker, who officially announced his presidential candidacy on July…
