Marion Hammer praises Greg Evers’ ‘random acts of kindness’

in Statewide/Top Headlines by

Marion Hammer, the NRA’s longtime lobbyist in Florida, eulogized former Republican state Sen. Greg Evers at his funeral this week. The 62-year-old was killed in a single-car accident near his home in Baker. Evers spent six years in the Florida Senate and a decade in the Florida House.

Marion Hammer sees paths around 11th Circuit’s ‘Docs v. Glocks’ ruling

in Statewide by

Gun-rights lobbyist Marion Hammer has denounced the 11th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals’ “Docs v. Glocks” ruling as “activist,” and complained the court “treats gun owners as second-class citizens.” “This activist decision attempts to use the First Amendment as a sword to terrorize the Second Amendment and completely disregards the rights and the will of the elected representatives of the people of Florida,” Hammer said. “This is not necessarily the final word on these important issues, as the state of Florida has…

‘Safe storage of loaded firearms’ bill filed in Florida Senate

in Statewide by

On Monday, Broward County Democratic state Sen. Gary Farmer, Jr. filed a bill that would tighten requirements on safely storing loaded firearms. Senate Bill 142 “[revises] the locations and circumstances in which a loaded firearm is required to be kept or secured with a trigger lock … [deleting] provisions relating to conditions for committing the crime of failing to safely store, leave, or secure a loaded firearm in a specified manner.” Among the “locations and circumstances” revised: storage of a firearm around…

A rundown of the real winners and losers from Florida’s general election

in Peter/Top Headlines by

Yesterday’s slate of general elections in Florida certainly provided a list of winners and losers, and I’m not just talking about the candidates. Here is my list of the real winners and losers coming out of Tuesday. Winners Rick Scott — The Naples Republican was an early backer of the president-elect, comparing Trump’s rise to his own 2010 gubernatorial run and even penning an op-ed way back in January that Trump captured “the frustration of many Americans.” No doubt he’s taking notes for his own rumored 2018…

Despite vow to ‘take on’ gun lobby, Gary Farmer earns an A+ rating from NRA. How?

in Peter/Top Headlines by

Many tidbits come across my desk, but this one jumped off my screen: Gary Farmer was just “awarded” an A+ rating by … wait for it … the National Rifle Association. If that doesn’t shock you, allow me to explain. During a very heated Democratic primary battle versus Jim Waldman in Senate District 34, the NRA’s scorecards became a yuuuge issue in the race. First, Farmer accused Waldman of earning an “A” rating. Waldman then fired back, calling it a lie…

Dick Kravitz lies (again) about NRA rating, as HD 16 race gets nastier

in Statewide/Top Headlines by

A new flyer from Republican Dick Kravitz offers House District 16 voters a laundry list of “accomplishments.” Among them, the former Jacksonville City Councilman and state representative claims he received an A+ rating from the National Rifle Association. One problem; it’s a boldface lie. “Dick Kravitz DOES NOT have an A+ rating from NRA,” writes Marion Hammer, past NRA president and executive director of Unified Sportsmen of Florida. In an email obtained by FloridaPolitics.com, Hammer says the ratings were posted…

Bob Buckhorn brings Florida Democratic delegation to their feet in morning address

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

There hasn’t been much talk about Bob Buckhorn and running for governor in 2018 for awhile. That conversation might change after the Tampa Mayor brought much of the crowd who gathered at the Florida Democratic Delegation breakfast at the Marriott Hotel in Philadelphia Wednesday morning. “I might start preaching here,” the mayor said, before he dramatically wound up to tout how significant it was that Hillary Clinton was the party’s nominee and how the state needed to change its direction in 2018. “Nobody ever…
