Marion Hammer, the NRA’s longtime lobbyist in Florida, eulogized former Republican state Sen. Greg Evers at his funeral this week. The 62-year-old was killed in a single-car accident near his home in Baker. Evers spent six years in the Florida Senate and a decade in the Florida House.

A last-ditch effort by the UCF Knights fell by the wayside Saturday night, leaving the team short of an upset bid against the Tulsa Golden Hurricane. Milton Mack’s fourth-and-goal pass from the four fell incomplete with four minutes to play, leaving UCF on the wrong side of a 35-20 defeat. The improvement of the UCF Knights was evident for the first half Saturday. The distance yet to travel was clear in the second. The Houston Cougars scored 28 straight points in the second half, taking a 31-24 comeback win over the UCF Knights. Sen. Greg Evers is running for Florida’s 1st Congressional District seat left vacant by retiring U.S. Rep. Jeff Miller. Evers filed his candidacy paperwork with the Federal Election Commission on Monday. He had made a formal announcement in Milton. Evers’ move to jump into the race for the deep-red Northwest Florida seat sets up a contentious GOP primary race against Rep. Matt Gaetz, who filed for the seat in March.
