Voting-by-mail becoming the clear choice of Pinellas voters in municipal elections

in The Bay and the 'Burg by

Pinellas County Supervisor of Elections Deborah Clark is right. Opponents of early voting, such as the St. Petersburg Times, are wrong. When it comes to voting-by-mail, the issue is as simple as that. Two years worth of elections clearly show that voters prefer early voting and voting-by-mail, at least as voter turnout is concerned. I’ve taken a look at the 2009 and 2010 municipal elections and the data clearly indicates that Pinellas voters have not only accepted the concept of…

Election Day

In The County Election, the artist presents a raucous voting party as an enactment of democracy, bringing together a variety of residents in a rural community to make decisions for the common good. In this crowded composition, Bingham suggests the inclusiveness of a democracy with representatives of every age and social stratum—except, of course, African Americans, who would not enjoy the right to vote until after the Civil War, and women, whose right to participate would not be recognized for…

in Peter/The Bay and the 'Burg by

The numbers do not lie: in March of 2001, more than 34% of voters turnout to choose the Mayor of St. Petersburg. 34% is not an especially impressive showing, but it’s certainly better than the 26% who turned-out earlier this month. And that was for a Mayoral Election. Consider the numbers when the Mayoral Race is not on the top of the ballot. In 2001, a paltry 12.77% took part in the city’s elections. By 2007, the number had fallen…

Those running for elected office in St. Petersburg were subjected to attending a gauntlet of sparsely-attended candidate forums, such as this one in Midtown. Not counting the candidates and their entourages, fewer than two dozen residents bothered to attend the meeting — about the same number of people who attended most of these events. In the run-up to the 2009 Municipal Elections, the City Council’s decision to vacate the sidewalk outside of BayWalk became a national story after a fight broke…
