in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

Good morning, y’all. Regular readers of this column may note that it’s being posted a little later this morning. Not to get into Too Much Information, but let’s just say I think when I read Arianna Huffington write that you must have 7/8 hours a sleep every night, well, one can certainly aspire to that. Rumor has it that Tampa attorney Bob Buesing will declare his candidacy as a Democrat for the newly created Senate District 18 seat in Hillsborough County on Monday. Local Dems…

Bob Gualtieri tops $62,000 in January from donors for sheriff re-election bid

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

Despite lacking any formidable opponent, Pinellas County Sheriff Bob Gualtieri doesn’t appear to be taking any chances in his re-election bid. Gualtieri raised more than $62,000 in January bringing his total campaign account to about $72,000. Gualtieri’s only filed opponent, James McLynas, has not raised a dime. Gualtieri’s fundraising haul came mostly from large contributions. More than $30,000 of his January total came from maximum $1,000 contributions. That includes several in the law enforcement and legal field. Former Pinellas County…

Norm Roche files suit against Pinellas County — claims he’s been “blackballed” from being hired

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

Norm Roche frequently disagreed with the other six members of the Pinellas County Commission during his one term in office that ended in 2014, but would any of them attempt to stop him from being hired by another part of the county government after he lost his bid for re-election last year? That’s the explosive charge that Roche is making in a lawsuit filed last week in the Sixth Judicial Circuit Court in Pinellas County. The 53-year-old Clearwater resident says he applied for 27…

Nancy Bostock not amused by Rick Kriseman’s “ban Trump” tweet

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

Nancy Bostock is not a fan of Rick Kriseman‘s Twitter feed. After more than 2,000 people shared and liked the St. Pete Mayor’s tweet Monday night joking that Donald Trump should be banned from St. Petersburg based on his hateful anti-Muslim rhetoric, Bostock, a former Pinellas County School Board member and former county commissioner, took to Facebook to condemn the Mayor’s statement. “It isn’t the poorly conceived humor directed at Trump that scares me … Trump asks for it … and…

Democratic consultants seek $72K to run campaign for Pinellas County Commission

in The Bay and the 'Burg by

A proposal to an undisclosed propsective candidate by Democratic political consultants Ian O’Hara and Matthew Snyder of Realization Management seeks an astounding $72,000 in fees to manage a campaign for the Pinellas County Commission. O’Hara and Snyder’s proposal is outlined in a series of e-mails and documents provided to me by an anonymous source. I’m not sure who O’Hara and Snyder drafted the proposal for. What is clear is that O’Hara and Snyder think awfully high of their talents. Their…

Harsh reaction to St. Petersburg Times’ recommendation of Bill Foster for Mayor from Tampa Bay’s progressive community

in The Bay and the 'Burg by

Call it The Endorsement Heard ‘Round The ‘Burg. In what some St. Pete insiders view as pure Machiavellian journalism, if not a complete sell-out of its core beliefs, The St. Petersburg Times, one of the nation’s best liberal newspapers endorsed, err…”recommended” is the preferred term, Bill Foster, an anti-evolution, anti-gay candidate. As Wayne Garcia of Creative Loafing writes: Actually, the Foster recommendation should come as no surprise to Times’ readers who observed the editorial board’s changing tone ever since Tim…
