Why the Quinnipiac poll spells T-R-O-U-B-L-E for Bernie Sanders

in Peter/Top Headlines by

As we noted in both salt shaker tests on the two recent Florida polls (Quinnipiac and AIF polls), the method used by Quinnipiac likely favors an outsider insurgent. Why is that? Quinnipiac asked randomly dialed Floridians to indicate first whether or not they were a registered voter, then which party they belonged to and then – this is the crux – whether or not they intended to vote. We know, with unquestioned certainty, that respondents exaggerate their propensity to vote.…

Salt Shaker Test: AIF poll says Donald Trump leads, but …

in Statewide/Top Headlines by

It’s not every day that we get two similar polls from reputable pollsters. Yesterday was such a day! Early Thursday morning, we got one from Quinnipiac and then a few hours later, Associated Industries of Florida (AIF) released a similar instrument with similar — but different — findings. What’s different? Notably, in the Q-Pac poll, Donald Trump leads by an eye-popping 16 points over Marco Rubio, while in the AIF poll, Trump still leads, but by a more manageable 7…

Today in Context Florida: Rick Scott’s xenophobia, Wild West family and No Party Affiliation voters

in Apolitical by

Today on Context Florida: The governor of Florida has permanently foreclosed the possibility that people will ever take him as anything other than a fool, says Chris Timmons. Gov. Rick Scott says it would be dangerous for Florida to accept 425 (though that is, in fact, unknown but Scott clings to it) Syrian refugees because of the recent attacks in Paris by jihadists (though these jihadists are European nationals). Scott’s kind of xenophobia is not unusual, Timmons adds. Thanksgiving is a…

Kendrick Meek’s sinking ship buoys Jeff Greene campaign

in Statewide by

From Kendric Ward: His name didn’t show up, but Jeff Greene can take heart from the latest polling in the U.S. Senate contest. The George Washington University/Battleground survey shows Republican Marco Rubio and independent Charlie Crist in a dead heat, with Democrat Kendrick Meek trailing nearly 20 points behind. It wasn’t always that way. Since Crist bolted the GOP and went “no party affiliation,” Meek’s numbers have nosedived in direct proportion to Crist’s rise. The longer Meek languishes, the more…

Charlie Crist to register with no party affiliation (day after I wrote about how he was still a registered Republican)

in Statewide/The Bay and the 'Burg by

Charlie Crist says he’ll stop by a county elections office to register with no party affiliation on a Wednesday trip to his hometown of St. Petersburg, a day after I wrote on my other blog, Battleground Tampa Bay, about how Crist was still a registered Republican. Crist will visit the Supervisor of Elections office in St. Petersburg at 2:45 p.m. Crist has already announced he’s leaving the Republican Party to make an independent run for U.S. Senate. He said Tuesday…
