In letter, Kevin McCarty says he’s willing to extend departure date

in Statewide/Top Headlines by

Kevin McCarty is telling his bosses: You need more time? You got it. The state’s outgoing Insurance Commissioner on Wednesday wrote separate but identical letters to Gov. Rick Scott, Chief Financial Officer Jeff Atwater, Attorney General Pam Bondi, and Agriculture Commissioner Adam Putnam. He said he would delay his departure to “45 days after my successor is appointed.” The state still hasn’t hired his replacement. The 56-year-old had announced in January that he was stepping down. He had held the post since 2003 and…

The Good, the Bad and the Interesting: Applicants for Florida revenue chief

in Statewide/Top Headlines by

Florida public records laws provide a treasure trove of information on candidates seeking top statewide positions, as well as a seemingly endless source of entertainment. Currently, the Florida Cabinet is seeking candidates for top jobs at both the Office of Insurance Regulation and the Department of Revenue. Unlike the Office of Insurance Regulation, the top job at Revenue does not have statutory qualification requirements. Nevertheless, one could assume that many of those seeking the job have significant managerial, financial or tax experience…

Tom Grady would not be applying for the position. Today, industry insiders are telling FloridaPolitics.com that the Governor’s Office may be looking at former state Representative and current Orange County Commissioner…

in Statewide/Top Headlines by

A Senate committee Tuesday unanimously approved a bill enabling insurance companies to sell standalone sinkhole policies for damages falling short of catastrophic loss, reports LobbyTools. The bill “would allow people to go out on the market and buy sinkhole coverage, standalone, not tied to their homeowner’s insurance,” said Sen. Jack Latvala, sponsor of Senate Bill 1274. Even though the bill was intended to be a “free market” solution, Latvala, a Clearwater Republican, told LobbyTools that individual regulatory agencies – such…

Consumer advocates urge lawmakers to keep preinsurance inspection requirement

in Statewide/Top Headlines by

Consumer advocates are calling on state lawmakers to tweak proposed legislation that removes the state’s preinsurance inspection requirement. The provision is in two bills (SB 1036/HB 659) relating to automobile insurance. Among other things, the measure allows an insurer to opt out of the preinsurance inspection program and create its own preinsurance program if it files a manual rule with the Office of Insurance Regulation. Jennifer West, executive director of the Consumer Federation of the Southeast, said removing the required…

Citizens Property Insurance Corp. — Florida’s state-backed “insurer of last resort” — received approval Monday to shed another 71,500 home insurance policies from its rolls amid an ongoing effort to reduce the state’s liabilities. The Florida Office of Insurance Regulation announced two private carriers have been approved to take over the policies, which cover properties private insurers previously deemed untenable for coverage.
