A suburban Chicago gun shop has canceled a raffle of a semi-automatic rifle to benefit victims of the nightclub shooting in Orlando, Florida. The Chicago Tribune reports Second Amendment Sports in McHenry, Illinois, called off the raffle following questions about whether it would be legal. Under Illinois law, only nonprofit groups may hold raffles. Bert Irslinger Jr. and his father own the shooting range and gun store. They were selling $5 tickets to win an AR-15 rifle similar to the…

Anderson Cooper talks about Pam Bondi interview during Orlando benefit

in Statewide/Top Headlines by

Anderson Cooper said he had every right to ask Attorney General Pam Bondi about her stance on gay marriage during an Orlando interview earlier this month. ā€œI wasn’t asking her about things she had done a year before out of the blue,ā€ said Cooper of his now infamous interview with Bondi in the days following the mass shooting at an Orlando night club. ā€œIt was something she said Sunday and something she said that day on another network. I thought…

Florence Snyder: Where the Sun don’t shine

in Statewide/Top Headlines by

The Department of Children and Families (DCF) is not the worst offender in Florida’s never-ending War on Open Government. It just gets caught in the act more often than fellow offenders at the state, county and municipal levels. That’s becauseĀ DCFĀ is one of the few agencies left which ever has to contend with watchdog journalism. DCFĀ chieftains, lawyers and flacks are well-acquainted with the well-oiledĀ BSĀ detector of the Miami Herald’s CarolĀ MarbinĀ Miller, a veteran investigative reporter who knows the difference between transparency, and transparent…

Mary Jo Melone: What a guy — Antonin Scalia on hate, guns and gridlock

in Statewide/Top Headlines by

Social etiquette requires that I not speak ill of the dead, but when the dead man was a U.S. Supreme Court Justice — namely, Antonin Scalia — speaking ill (civilly, although that is not in fashion) is an absolute necessity. Especially now. After Orlando. Scalia defended criminalizing gay sex because many people don’t like gays. ā€œThey view this as protecting themselves from a lifestyle that they believe to be immoral and destructive.ā€ He said banning gay sex was no different…

Joe Henderson: It’s not that Marco Rubio reneged; it’s that he did a lousy job in Senate

in 2017/Top Headlines by

The factĀ Marco RubioĀ reneged on his vow not to run for re-election to the U.S. Senate isn’t that big of a deal. Politicians change their minds all the time. A much bigger deal — and a reality Marco apologists choose to ignore — is the fact Rubio has done a spectacularly lousy job since elected to the Senate in 2010. And then there is this: Part of his motivation to return to a job he loudly and often claimed to loathe…

From Key West to Pensacola, Florida’s LGBT attitudes differ

in Statewide/Top Headlines by

Florida’s Key West is one of the most gay-friendly places in the country. The Florida Panhandle – many locals call it the Redneck Riviera – is a different story. The massacre of 49 people in a gay nightclub happened between these extremes, forcing many Floridians to reconsider their assumptions about the state’s evolving culture. Key West has a gay police chief, a lesbian county mayor and was the nation’s first city to elect an openly gay mayor. It attracts 450,000…
