Quinnipiac produces another sky-high poll on Floridians supporting medical pot

in Statewide/Top Headlines by

With 58 percent support, Floridians proved at the polls in 2014 that they supported medical marijuana. Unfortunately, the magic number was 60 percent, which is why the issue is probably going to be back on the ballot in 2016. A new poll by Quinnipiac University shows huge support for a pot proposal, with 84 percent of surveyed registered voters in Florida saying they support legalization of medical marijuana and just 14 percent saying they were opposed. Also, 52 percent said…

RNC vows unprecedented war-room effort to go after Hillary Clinton

in Top Headlines by

Officials with the Republican National Committee said today they are preparing for a massive campaign to mobilize and activate the GOP base to thwart Hillary Clinton’s candidacy, beginning on the day she officially announces she’s running for president. They claim that the party has never prosecuted a campaign of this magnitude, ever. In an off-the-record conference with party activists and media surrogates, officials said that “everything is focused like a laser” on the probable 2016 Democratic presidential candidate. Recently national polls show her leading Jeb Bush and/or other…

Jeb Bush losing ground in Florida, according to new Quinnipiac Poll

in 2017/Top Headlines by

There’s some good news and some bad news for Jeb Bush and his supporters in a new Quinnipiac survey of Republican primary voters in Florida. The former governor continues to lead the field of potential 2016 candidates with 24 percent. That’s 9 percentage points more than the next candidate in Florida, Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker, who comes in at 15 percent. Marco Rubio is a close third with 12 percent. However, that’s an 8-point drop for Bush since the last…

Mitch Perry Report for 4.1.15 — The Tampa Bay Times has had enough with some City Council members

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

The St. Petersburg City Council won’t be voting on that newly revised agreement that Mayor Rick Kriseman worked out with the Tampa Bay Rays last week that seemingly resolved the main conflict in why the Council didn’t approve the deal last December — the redevelopment rights to Tropicana Field. The new deal the mayor negotiated would ensure that all proceeds from those rights would (rightly) go to the city, and not the departing baseball franchise. But that’s not sufficient enough for several…

Mitch Perry Report for 3.6.15 — the Democrats lack of bench strength transcends Florida

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

It’s been written about ad nauseum about the lack of a strong Democratic bench in Florida. That certainly was the case in 2014, when the party had to resort to a flawed former Republican to become their gubernatorial nominee against an equally flawed current Republican. And that’s why Bob Buckhorn began raising campaign funds for a 2018 bid for governor in December, three months before his (inevitable) re-election victory for four (or three and a half?) more years as Tampa’s mayor.…

Scott Walker & Jeb Bush top the field in new GOP national presidential poll

in Top Headlines by

A new Quinnipiac poll released today shows that Scott Walker and Jeb Bush continue to stand above the rest in the early going of the 2016 GOP presidential field. Walker comes in at 18 percent and Bush follows with 16 percent in the national poll released Thursday morning. Then it’s a big drop, with New Jersey Gov. Christopher Christie and former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee tied at 8 percent each. Retired physician Ben Carson (who has now apologized for saying…

Why Kendrick Meek needs to debate Jeff Greene

in Statewide by

Creative Loafing’s Mitch Perry lays out the case for why Kendrick Meek should debate Jeff Greene.  And soon. An excerpt: Meek needs to debate Greene and [Maurice] Ferre soon.  Why? Because he’s currently mired in third place, well behind Republican Marco Rubio and former Republican Charlie Crist in the battle to become the next U.S. senator from Florida.  And there’s no indication in any way that he’ll soon break out of that third-place finish come November. Meek’s biggest problem had…
