Have you heard this before? The Rays lose to a first-place team

in Sports/Top Headlines by

Right now, there seems to be advantage the Tampa Bay Rays cannot overcome. A great start by the pitcher? Matt Moore retired the first 13 batters he faced. But over the next two innings, he gave up six hits and five runs. A good start by the offense? The Rays scored three times in the first and had six of their first seven hitters reach base. However, the Rays never scored again. It all added up for the Rays in…

Rays trade for Oswaldo Arcia to help bolster their aching outfield

in Sports/Top Headlines by

The Tampa Bay Rays have found themselves a bit of help with a trade. But only a bit. The Rays acquired Oswaldo Arcia, 25, from the Minnesota Twins. He is hitting .214 with four home runs in 32 games. Over his four years with the Twins, Arcia is batting .240. He was second on the team with 20 home runs two years ago. The trade would seem to end any speculation about Carl Crawford returning to the Rays. Tampa Bay…

What can the Tampa Bay Rays do about pitcher Chris Archer’s struggles?

in Sports/Top Headlines by

They gave Drew Smyly a day off. They sent Matt Andriese to the bullpen. They sent Dana Eveland to the minors. Ah, but what should the Tampa Bay Rays do with Chris Archer? Archer, an all-star a year ago, continued his terrible start to his season, and to his games, in a 6-1 loss the Cleveland Wednesday night. There for a while, Erasmo Ramirez couldn’t help but win baseball games. If the Rays won, it was more often than not Ramirez who got the victory. He won six of his first seven games, and he had a 1.13 ERA. It was a Ramirez world. Since then, however, Ramirez has struggled. He had a 4.81 ERA in his next 17 appearances. Then came a forgettable Monday night in a 7-4 loss to the Cleveland Indians. Ramirez entered the game…

in Sports/Top Headlines by

The Tampa Bay Rays continue to lose outfielders. The Rays lost their fourth outfielder recently when Mikie Mahtook fractured his left hand after being hit by a pitch in the second inning. There is no word how long Mahtook will be out. Tampa Bay had already lost Kevin Kiermaier, Steven Souza and Brandon Guyer from their outfield. Mahtook had been struggling with a .154 average. The Rays already had been rumored to have an interest in former teammate Carl Crawford.

Might the Rays be interested in bringing Carl Crawford home?

in Sports/Top Headlines by

Might the Tampa Bay Rays be interested in bringing an old star home? The Rays, beaten up in the outfield, might be looking for a bit of help. Former left-field all-star Carl Crawford, just released by the Los Angeles Dodgers, might be looking for a job. Could the two be right for each other once again? Maybe. But Crawford was hitting only .185 when he was released. He’d be a short-stay option until Kevin Kiermaier, Steven Souza and Brandon Guyer…
