Chris Archer gets work after Rays-Orioles game is rained out

in Sports/Top Headlines by

And some days it rains. The Tampa Bay Rays were off to a good start Saturday. Starting pitcher Chris Archer had retired the first two batters of the Baltimore Orioles. And then it rained. Archer spent the rest of the day under cover, simulating a game by throwing to Curt Casali with Steven Souzi standing in as the hitter. Archer felt good about Saturday’s results. “The effort and the intensity was the exact same,” Archer said. “And I made sure…

Brad Miller is the new starting shortstop for the Tampa Bay Rays because of his glove. Friday, however, it was his bat that made some noise. Rays lose closer Brad Boxberger for eight weeks after injury

in Sports by

At the start, the problem for the Tampa Bay Rays may be closing. The Rays have lost all-star closer Brad Boxberger, whose 41 saves led the American League in 2015. Boxberger had surgery to repair an abdominal muscle injury and will miss eight weeks. That would keep Boxberger sidelined for the season’s first month. The Rays had depended heavily upon Boxberger. They traded away Jake McGee, their other reliever with extensive closing history. Instead, manager Kevin Cash said, the team…

Despite their successes, it figures to be tough for either to make the team with the additions of Corey Dickerson, Steve Pearce and Logan Morrison plus the return of Desmond Jennings. The Rays beat the Phillies behind another good effort by Matt Moore, who struck out eight in…

Rays’ Chris Archer not aggressive enough in 2nd defeat

in Sports by

If Chris Archer is preparing for a lack of support, he’s in midseason form already. Archer’s spring training record fell to 0-2 Monday after a 5-0 loss to the Atlanta Braves. Archer gave up only two runs, and one of those was unearned, in absorbing the loss. โ€œThe past two games I’ve started a little slow in the first inning,โ€ Archer said. โ€œI think I’ve been a little too passive. I’m not a passive pitcher. I have to be extremely…
