Steven Souza Jr. to disabled list; John Jaso returns to Rays

in Sports/Top Headlines by

As injury riddled as the Tampa Bay Rays have been this season, even breaking even feels like a victory. The Rays have lost outfielder Steven Souza Jr. for the short term with lacerations to his pinky finger. Souza was placed on the 15-day disabled list Tuesday, two days after being hit on the hand. However, the Rays did get back designated hitter John Jaso, who has been on the DL since opening day with a deep bruise to his left wrist.…

AL All-Stars include Chris Archer, Brad Boxberger

in Sports/Top Headlines by

The Tampa Bay Rays didn’t have any everyday players named to the American League All-Star game, but they could have something to say about who starts and who finishes it. The Rays had two pitchers named to the All-Star game Monday, one who was thought to be a sure thing and the other who said he felt “shock” that he was named. Starter Chris Archer (9-5) and reliever Brad Boxberger (20 saves) were named to the team Monday. It has…

Rays finally end their losing skid by beating Yankees

in Sports/Top Headlines by

Finally. Relief. The Tampa Bay Rays won a baseball game at last Sunday afternoon, finally getting enough hitting, enough scoring and enough pitching to return to the win column after losing seven straight ballgames. They beat the New York Yankees, 8-1, scoring the game’s first four and its last four. The Rays had been fairly creative in all their losing, dropping games on three-run homers and on botched bunt plays. They had won only one of their previous 10 games.…

Tampa Bay throws one away as its losing streak continues

During their recent slump, the hitting of the Tampa Bay Rays has been questioned. The pitching has been questioned. And now, the defense. Before long, the entire blueprint of the Rays will be questioned. The Rays lost, again. This time, it was 3-2, and this time, it was the gloves that let the team down. Brad Boxberger’s error in the bottom of the ninth allowed the winning run home, costing Tampa Bay another heartbreaker to the New York Yankees. Tampa…

Rays blow two big leads as their losing streak continues

in Sports/Top Headlines by

Even when the Tampa Bay Rays hit these days, they lose. The Rays blew two big leads (one of three runs in regulation and one of two  in extra innings) Friday night to lose their sixth game, this one 7-5 to the New York Yankees, which undid a lot of deficit with home run balls. The Rays have now lost eight of their last 10 games. A three-run homer by Mark Teixeira in the eighth and another by Brian McCann…

Rays lose again despite an offensive ‘explosion’

in Sports/Top Headlines by

Perhaps it is a good thing the Tampa Bay Rays were not on television Thursday. These days, the Rays are just too hard to watch. The Rays were swept in their four-game series against the Cleveland Indians, and their ccurrent streak fell to only 2-9, and the Rays took firm control of fourth place in the AL East. This time, the Rays lost in the 10th inning on a home run by Mike Aviles. Yeah, it has looked ugly lately.…

Indians’ Carrasco barely misses no-hitter against Rays

in Sports/Top Headlines by

There are two questions that beg asking for a Tampa Bay baseball fan today: How are the Tampa Bay Rays near first place? How are the Cleveland Indians five games under .500? Fans could ask as the teams sped in different directions Wednesday night. Led by pitcher Carlos Carrasco, the Indians smothered the Rays’ offense once again. Carrasco was one pitch away from a no-hitter, finishing with an easy 8-1 victory over the slumping Rays. Carrasco struck out 13 and…
