Polling firm St. Pete Polls concluded that UCF medical student “Sunshine” Lunda Grund has also garnered support to the tune of 5.8 percent in her quixotic no-party bid that has yet to gain much traction. He’s not up for re-election until 2017, but already the cards are stacking up against St. Pete Mayor Rick Kriseman. The same mayor who always shows up in public with a beaming smile touting his Sunshine City also seems to have a dark cloud following him around. No matter how much good Kriseman accomplishes, he always seems to be moments away from damage control. Bob Buckhorn rewarded for RLC support with big American Traffic Soutions donation

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

As Tampa Mayor Bob Buckhorn continues to support red light cameras, it may come as little surprise that he received a big campaign check from Florida’s leading red light camera provider. State records filed last week show $10,000 in June coming from American Traffic Solutions (ATS) to the Buckhorn-supporting “One Florida” political action committee. Siobhan Harley, a former Buckhorn aide, formed the PAC in late 2014. Although Buckhorn easily won re-election – facing nearly non-existent opposition — PAC money could…

WTSP: As profits plunge, red light cameras could go dark around Tampa Bay

Of every violation — usually a $158 fine — $83 goes to the State of Florida; the remaining $75 goes to pay RLC contracts,…

Red-light camera crackdown stalls in Senate, gets green light in House

in Top Headlines by

Efforts to put the brakes on the use of red-light cameras by municipalities stalled in the Florida Senate on Tuesday, but is continuing to cruise in the House. State Sen. Jeff Brandes and state Rep. Brian Avila say the money the cameras raise in fines should be used for public safety programs. An OPPAGA report found that most of the revenue generated by the fines, $119 million in 2013, is used as part of local governments’ general revenue fund. “If public safety is…

House red-light cameras bill rolls through committee stop

in Top Headlines by

State Rep. Bryan Avila faced pointed scrutiny in the House Transportation & Economic Development Appropriations Subcommittee on Monday, as he played shepherd to a bill that would circumscribe the way cities and local governments can use controversial devices to detect traffic infractions known as red-light cameras. HB 7071 sought to limit the amount of infraction-based revenue cities get to spend on matters unrelated to public safety — many have referred to the cameras as “cash cows” for municipalities — require citations…

DHSMV review of red-light cameras failed to include crash increases

in Statewide/Top Headlines by

Red-light cameras appear to have little or no effect on safety in many areas in Florida, according to a new report by WTSP 10 Investigates. But the state failed to include that information in its annual review of the program. Most of Florida cities and counties with the controversial RLC-monitored intersections have reported crash statistics that have remained either steady or increased since putting in cameras. Although the Florida Department of Highway Safety & Motor Vehicles (DHSMV) compiled the unflattering…
