Florida Senate poised to shift to the right

in Statewide by

From the Jacksonville Observer: The Florida Senate could be poised for a major power shift, with a bloc of moderate Republicans likely weakened by departures and intra-party rivalries. The changes are already underway, lawmakers and lobbyists say. Republican Sen. Joe Negron’s victory this week in a special election to replace outgoing Sen. Ken Pruitt, R-Port St. Lucie, is expected to tilt the seat slightly more to the right. And another special election this fall to replace the late Sen. Jim…

Donkeys out-raise Elephants

From the Buzz: Here’s a switch: The Florida Democratic Party outraised the state GOP in the three months that ended June 30, $1.19-million to $1.16. That’s the first time that’s happened in a second quarter since 1996, when the Division of Elections started putting the records online. Jay Bookman: The ultra-conservative wing of the GOP wants to make Florida’s Republican Senate primary a test case of its power. The race pits Gov. Charlie Crist, a moderate who had the audacity to endorse President Obama’s stimulus plan, against hard-core conservative Marco Rubio, a former speaker of the state House. Crist also just signed a new state budget raising the cigarette tax and various fees by $2 billion, an act that further fueled conservative anger. Even worse, the moderate…

From Red County: Being a man of my word, here is the follow up to “Charlie Crist runs for cover.”  Let’s talk about the Barack Hussein Obama’s “porkulus” package. It is being reported here on Redcounty.com that former Governor Jeb Bush accepted billions of federal dollars more than Governor Crist has just accepted. This is true. But ask yourself? What was the state of our economy at the time? Governor Bush accepted the funds during a period of prosperity, and…

New Majority blog: Charlie Crist the better bet for Republicans

in Statewide by

From Andrew Pavelyev’s New Majority Blog: “Are conservatives nuts? I keep hearing wild enthusiasm about Marco Rubio’s challenge to Charlie Crist. But why make the perfect the enemy of the good? This is not merely about the next election. That seat will be up for reelection in 2016. By that time Fidel will be 90 and almost certainly dead. Raul is just a few years younger, and his chances to make it are not all that great either. In any…

John Cornyn responds directly on Red State blog re: NRSC endorsement of Crist

in Statewide by

Senator John Cornyn posted directly on Red State: “While this political environment appears dire and presents short-term setbacks for Republicans, I believe that it also provides us with a real opportunity for 2010. Next November could be a turning point for the future of our Party – but only if we unite and take advantage of this critical opportunity. That means holding the Democrats accountable for their records, providing real solutions, reaching out to new constituencies, and fielding candidates who…
