Leslie Curran emerging as ‘voice of opposition’ to Bill Foster’s City Hall

in The Bay and the 'Burg by

Ouch. Ouch. OUCH! As much as it pains me to write this – ouch! – City Councilmember Leslie Curran is emerging as a counterweight, if not the voice of opposition, to Mayor Bill Foster’s City Hall, a suprising development considering that Curran and Foster are both Republicans from the same part of town who share similar worldviews. Yet, since becoming Chair of the City Council, Curran’s frustration with some of Foster’s heavy-handedness is becoming apparent. Consider this exchange during a…

Even the Super Bowl has gone partisan

in Apolitical by

In a time of increasing political polarization, even the Super Bowl is dividing Americans along party lines. A new Public Policy Polling national survey finds that 32% of voters in the country are rooting for the New Orleans Saints on Sunday, compared to 22% who prefer the Indianapolis Colts. Democrats strongly prefer the Saints, by a 36-21 margin. But Republicans are narrowly going for the Colts, 26-25. Independents lean toward the Saints as well, 33-20. Perhaps the most interesting thing…

Did Kendrick Meek get a fair shake from the latest Quinnipiac Poll?

in Peter/Statewide by

Lord knows I’ve spent the last couple of weeks dogging Kendrick Meek’s campaign for what I believe is a lackluster effort to gather the requisite number of voter signatures needed to qualify for the ballot. But I criticize out of love. Tough love, but love nevertheless. It’s for that same reason why I need to defend Meek’s position in the latest Quinnipiac Poll, which, because it showed Marco Rubio ahead of Charlie Crist for the first time, is being cited…

Thank you, Chris Dodd

in Uncategorized by

Sen. Chris Dodd’s sacrifice for his party appears to have paid off, big-time. There’s lots of meat in three new Quinnipiac polls for Democrats and the Obama administration to consider. In a nutshell, the polls show Chris Dodd did Democrats a huge favor by bowing out of the Connecticut Senate race, which now appears to be completely out of reach for Republicans, and they show that while voters like Barack Obama much more than they did George W. Bush (who…

538.com’s Nate Silver weighs in on Florida 2010: ‘Charlie Crist is not a good sharer’

in Statewide by

From Nate Silver of 538.com, the best political site you should be reading. Here are Charlie Crist’s favorability ratings among registered voters in Florida, according to the Quinnipiac poll. Crist’s favorability ratings are higher among independents than among Democrats or Republicans (although not by a statistically significant margin in the former case). That’s very unusual for a politician who does not actually call himself an independent. Still, although Crist’s favorability ratings with Republicans have declined some, they’re still pretty decent.…

My 1,000th post: I will be Live Tweeting from Glenn Beck’s book signing in Tampa and his rally where he will reveal “The Plan”

in Peter/Statewide by

First of all, thank you for making this blog so worthwhile that, with this one, I will have written 1,000 posts worth of opinions, apologies, endorsements, gotchas, links, predictions, pleas for mercy, rants, screeds, etc., etc. They say the first 1,000 is always the hardest to write, just as the first million is always the most difficult to earn. So, hopefully, the next 1,000 will come sooner — and easier — than the first. Regardless, I really am grateful for…

Mel Martinez’s departure shows Hispanic rift

in Statewide by

From Breitbart: Florida U.S. Sen. Mel Martinez’s resignation closes the latest chapter in the Republican Party’s tumultuous, decade-long effort to woo the nation’s Hispanic voters. The Cuban-American’s impending departure could leave no Hispanic Republicans in the Senate and three in the House—compared to 21 Democrats in Congress—and a sense that the national GOP is at a major crossroads with the nation’s fastest-growing demographic group… Although most Hispanics outside of Florida have long leaned Democratic, the Republican Party earned the trust…
