Corcoran & Johnston hauls in $1.3 million in Q2 lobbying fees

in Statewide/Top Headlines by

Corcoran & Johnston collected an estimated $1.3 million during the second quarter of 2015, according to recently submitted compensation reports. The firm’s largest invoices came from Sharon Robinson, who is a guardian and personal representative seeking relief from the state of Florida. Robinson easily broke six figures in paying $84,000 for legislative lobbying efforts and between $30,000 -$39,999 for executive branch lobbying. The iconic Fontainebleu Florida Hotel in Miami also paid a pretty penny for representation in Tallahassee last quarter — its total fees ran to…

in Statewide/Top Headlines by

The Florida arm of the conservative advocacy group Americans for Prosperity has issued its annual legislative scorecard, which ranks state legislators based on their propensity to vote “pro-economic freedom.” The group graded all 160 state lawmakers based on their votes on economic issues. Votes considered in favor of deregulation were rewarded, whereas votes that reined in industry were given negative scores. As was the case in years past, Republicans did well and House Republicans did even better. Forty-six members of the House, or…

State law enforcement radio money spared Gov. Scott’s veto ax

in Statewide/Top Headlines by

Gov. Rick Scott vetoed more than $461 million in state spending this morning, or about six percent of all appropriations in the 2015-2016 budget. It was his second largest spilling of red ink over line items since acting on his first General Appropriations Act in office — when he nixed some $615 million in 2011’s $70 billion budget. Not on the chopping block: $7 million to replace state law enforcement radios that have “reached their end-of-life or end of support date,” to…

Richard Corcoran to Rick Scott: ‘Go forth boldly and veto’

in Statewide/Top Headlines by

House budget chief Richard Corcoran has a message for Gov. Rick Scott. “I would tell the governor to go forth boldly and veto,” Corcoran, said paraphrasing Martin Luther. Corcoran worked with Senate budget chief Tom Lee to hammer out a nearly $79 billion spending plan for fiscal year 2015-16. Addressing a group of reporters outside the House chambers minutes after the Legislature agreed to sine die, Corcoran said Florida governors have line-item veto authority.  Despite legislative attempts to protect portions…

In last-minute budget talks, lawmakers add some $300+ million in new spending in dark of night

in Statewide/Top Headlines by

At a final budget conference meeting that began at the tender hour of 11:05 p.m. and ran until nearly midnight, state budget writers failed to fully address new state funding for hospitals — the primary impetus for the June special session to begin with. But they did find time to load up the budget with hundreds of millions of taxpayer dollars for new projects, most of which had never seen the light of day or public comment until late in…

As Rick Scott travels to Paris, lawmakers inch closer to final budget

in Statewide/Top Headlines by

Gov. Rick Scott traveled to Paris on Friday aiming to bring back to his home state economic development projects. But while Scott is away House and Senate budget negotiators have reached a deal to give the governor considerably less money than he wanted for business recruitment. Sen. Tom Lee and Rep. Richard Corcoran on Saturday agreed to the transportation and economic development portion of the budget. Despite a fervent push from Enterprise Florida officials, the final deal calls for setting…
