Tree lighting, concerts and local shopping fill St. Pete’s holiday weekend calendar

St. Pete’s holiday display is going up this Friday, the day after Thanksgiving. Mayor Rick Kriseman and Deputy Mayor Kanika Tomalin will light up the city’s giant Christmas tree and various other holiday displays at Vinoy and North Straub Parks at 7 p.m. Festivities start at 5 with live music from the St. Petersburg Community Band, Musicstars and Expressions Dance Studio. St. Pete implements program aimed at streamlining building permits

Small construction projects in St. Pete are about to get a little easier. Mayor Rick Kriseman announced Tuesday the “Stop, Drop & Go” program to ease the permitting process on what the city refers to as small over-the-counter commercial projects. Examples of work that would qualify for the new permitting process include kitchen or bathroom remodels or door and window replacement. Twin Brooks municipal golf course in St. Pete has been reopened since earlier this month, but the city will officially celebrate Saturday. St. Pete City Council will talk about whether or not to get behind a water ferry proposal that would cart residents and visitors between downtown St. Pete and Tampa.
