Rick Kriseman lays out 2016 legislative priorities

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

St. Pete Mayor Rick Kriseman was first up at a Pinellas County Legislative Delegation meeting Tuesday to lay out his list of priorities for the legislative session next year. Two of his proposals are repeat asks from last year that were not approved. That includes funding for a Bus Rapid Transit pilot program that would create an express bus route connecting downtown St. Pete to the beaches along First Avenues North and South. Powerhouse State Senator Jack Latvala left a…

Lisa Wheeler-Brown’s victory highlights St. Pete’s progressive shift

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

Lisa Wheeler-Brown’s City Council victory Tuesday wasn’t just a victory for her – it was a victory for women. For the first time in St. Petersburg’s history three of the city’s eight council members will be women. And that represents a win for diversity in general. The current council, and the one that will still exist after inaugurations in January, also contains three openly gay councilmembers including the two women currently on council, Darden Rice and Amy Foster, and Steve…

No bids for Pier Park restaurant brings more Pier Park criticism

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

A bidding process for a restaurant located in the Pier Park design yielded not a single interested party. Not a single restaurateur submitted a request for proposal by Thursday’s 1 p.m. deadline. The Tampa Bay Times reports the city is downplaying the lack of initial interest. “It’s early,” St. Pete director of development coordination Chris Ballestra told the Times. “This would go in a project that won’t open until 2018.” He said he wasn’t surprised the two planned spaces failed to draw interest right…

Could Rick Kriseman’s City Council win really be a loss?

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

In SaintPetersBlog publisher Peter Schorsch’s rundown of winners and losers from the St. Pete City Council election this week, he counts Mayor Rick Krisemn among the winners. “With [Lisa Wheeler-Brown’s] victory, he has another ally on City Council and the fifth vote for his deal with the Tampa Bay Rays. The mayor also deserves credit for not appearing to put too heavy a thumb on the scale for his preferred candidate,” Schorsch wrote. Indeed, that is a win for the…

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

Tuesday’s slate of elections in St. Petersburg certainly provided a list of winners and losers, and I’m not just talking about the candidates. Here’s my list of the real winners and losers coming out of Tuesday’s elections. Let me know if I missed anyone. Winners Ed Montanari – Lost in the three City Council races that were on the ballot Tuesday is the one that wasn’t: the race for District 2, which Montanari won uncontested. As the only elected Republican in City Hall,…

Old Northeast, downtown voters favored Lisa Wheeler-Brown

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

Lisa Wheeler-Brown, winner of Tuesday night’s City Council contest, rocked Historic Old Northeast in the election. According to data from the Pinellas County Supervisor of Elections, the precincts where Wheeler-Brown earned the most votes over her opponent, Will Newton, were in that general vicinity. She also crushed the vote in downtown. The Old Northeast Precinct No. 135, which butts up against Coffee Pot Bayou, cast more than 250 more votes for Wheeler-Brown than Newton. In the downtown Precinct No. 123, which…

Rick Kriseman casts ballot for Lisa Wheeler-Brown, not because of Rays

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

St. Petersburg Mayor Rick Kriseman cast his vote for Lisa Wheeler-Brown Tuesday afternoon at his polling place at Pilgrim Congregation on Central Avenue in West St. Pete. It was a special day for Kriseman. It was his 18-year old daughter’s first time casting a ballot as a registered voter.
