Mitch Perry Report for 7.23.15 — Cuba not only difference between Buckhorn and Kriseman

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

Attitudes regarding fostering a relationship with Cuba is only of several differences between Bob Buckhorn and Rick Kriseman. Kameel Stanley in today’s Times writes about how Kriseman is hot to trot to Havana sometime this year. That’s in contrast to Buckhorn, who has been steadfast in his lack of enthusiasm for hosting a Cuban consulate in Tampa. While it’s true that everything needs to be looked at from a political perspective, Buckhorn is hardly kowtowing to South Florida Cuban exiles with his stance…

Could the Times be celebrating Mike Connors’ slash in responsibility?

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

The Tampa Bay Times posted a scathing story about St. Pete Mayor Rick Kriseman’s scaling back of a key staffer’s role. Public Works Administrator Mike Connors will oversee 200 fewer employees as a result of a staffing change that removes him from power over the city’s sanitation department, which includes its newly rolled out recycling program. He also is being removed as the head of the city’s purchasing department, which oversaw the purchase of seven recycling pickup trucks. Despite the…

Lisa Wheeler-Brown says Trop site is prime development for ‘booming’ St. Pete

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

Leading the pack of five City Council candidates in District 7, Lisa Wheeler-Brown has already nabbed endorsements from two City Council members, including Karl Nurse and Darden Rice. It may be little coincidence that both of those council members are two of the four currently supporting Mayor Rick Kriseman’s deal brokered with the Tampa Bay Rays to allow the team’s management to begin looking for stadium space outside the city. Wheeler-Brown has long said she supports that Memorandum of Understanding.…

Three neighborhoods rally to make St. Pete recycling more flexible

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

A coalition of traditional neighborhoods in St. Pete is angry the city has still not responded to repeated requests for alley recycling pickup, mirroring the way trash is picked up in those areas. Alley access is available in 40 percent of St. Pete neighborhoods, but the city’s newly rolled out universal recycling program only collects recycling from the 95 gallon blue rolling bins from the curbside. The neighborhoods, Historic Old Northeast, Granada Terrace, Historic Kenwood and the Saint Petersburg Downtown…

As Kriseman outlined in a summary of the budget posted on the city’s website, his proposal contains three major changes from 2015. City employees stand to earn an extra three percent on their paychecks under the proposed budget. Mitch Perry Report for 7.9.15 — Pier politics returns yet again in St. Pete

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

You’ve gotta love Tom Lambdon. Well, let me take that back. You don’t have to love anybody. In fact, there are many people in St. Petersburg who would hope to never hear this man’s name mentioned in polite company ever again. But civic activists like Lambdon wouldn’t get anywhere if they weren’t representing others who need someone to lead them. I mention the Safety Harbor resident because the St. Pete City Council is meeting today to consider contracts for Pier…
