Roy Williams

Hall of Fame coach vs. future Hall of Famer for NCAA title

in Sports/Top Headlines by

Roy Williams has been here before. Just last year, in fact. And five times altogether, playing for the NCAA championship. Twice he got to celebrate winning the final game of the season with the Tar Heels, pushing their total to five tournament titles. For Mark Few and Gonzaga, this is all new. Just getting to the Final Four was a first, and now they are one victory from lifting the trophy. If it came down to history, tradition and experience,…

Play it back: rematches to decide last two spots in Final Four

The most entertaining college basketball game of the regular season came in December. Malik Monk set a record for a Kentucky freshman with 47 points, including a go-ahead 3-pointer taken against his coach’s wishes, to lift the Wildcats to a 103-100 win over North Carolina. Are these two ready for an encore? Of course they are – though it’s a valid argument to say this rematch might be better suited for next weekend in the Final Four than Sunday in…

The Villanova Wildcats won what might have been the greatest NCAA Championship Game in history on Monday night, beating the North Carolina Tar Heels on a three-pointer at the buzzer by Kris Jenkins. The North Carolina Tar Heels earned their place in the national championship game with an 83-66 victory over Syracuse on Saturday. The Tar Heels wore down a pesky Orange team at NRG Stadium in Houston and earned their place against the Villanova Wildcats. North Carolina’s tall and strong front line made up for off-target long-range shooting. While the Tar Heels shot only four of 17 from three-point range, they were 35 for 65 overall, many on layups, dunks and put-back.…

Syracuse and North Carolina will square off in Saturday’s second game of the NCAA men’s Final Four. Both coaches, Syracuse’s Jim Boeheim and North Carolina’s Roy Williams, have enjoyed the high of winning it all. They have also endured the low of having their basketball programs under investigation by the NCAA. Fortunately for the fans, the legal aspect of NCAA rule compliance will take a back seat on Saturday. Instead, the focus will be complying with on-court rules such as…

Final Four coaches learned under some of the greats

in Sports/Top Headlines by

The Final Four often brings at least one young head coach to the big stage for the first time. Some recent examples include Brad Stevens, who brought Butler to a surprising appearance in the title game in 2010 at the age of 33. Shaka Smart, also 33, led Virginia Commonwealth (VCU) to the Final Four in 2011. In 2000, Billy Donovan, then only 34, took the Florida Gators to the championship game. This year, all four coaches are seasoned veterans.…
