Bob Buckhorn crosses party lines to help Shawn Harrison’s bid for re-election

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

In 2016, Democrats targeted a handful of Florida House districts they believed they could flip from red to blue. One of them was Hillsborough County’s House District 63, where the Florida Democratic Party put some money behind Lisa Montelione in her bid to oust Republican incumbent Shawn Harrison. After a close race, Harrison ultimately prevailed, 51 to 49 percent. Although off-year elections are traditionally harder for Democrats, there is hope that an energetic resistance to Donald Trump could make 2018 a year of opportunity.…

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

For Democrats, Donald Trump might be making life a hell on earth. But the president is successful in one thing — uniting them in a way missing throughout the 2016 campaign. Take the Hillsborough County Democratic Executive Committee, for instance. On Monday night, the local party added 44 new members to its organization at its monthly meeting at the Children’s Board of Hillsborough County in Ybor City. Subcommittee accepts complaint against Alan Clendenin, but he remains eligible for Fla. Dem Chair

in Statewide/Top Headlines by

Blame it on the fog of internal byzantine party rules, but Alan Clendenin remains eligible for Florida Democratic Party chair. Late Friday afternoon, this website reported that Clendenin was ineligible to compete in Saturday’s vote, after an FDP subcommittee voted to accept a complaint filed against him regarding his move last month from Hillsborough County to Bradford County to make himself eligible for the election. However, the entire state committee will be asked to accept or reject the subcommittee’s vote on Saturday morning before they vote for…

Hispanics now account in Hillsborough alone for over twenty-five percent of the population or one in every four persons. Alan understands our issues and has always stood by us whenever we needed help.” according to Hispanic Caucus President, William “Bill” Guerra. It was a rare show of support for Clendenin…

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

Coconut Grove real estate developer and major political donor Stephen Bittel rolled out a list of new endorsements of bid for Florida Democratic Party chair on Monday, including South Florida congressional members Ted Deutch, Lois Frankel, and Alcee Hastings . Also backing Bittel is Janet Cruz, the House Minority Leader from Tampa, which also is the (once and former) home of Alan Clendenin, who is running again for the leadership post after losing a close race in 2013 to outgoing chair Allison Tant. Clendenin lost his bid for state committeeman in Hillsborough County last month,…

Alan Clendenin moves to Bradford County, becomes state committeeman, now running for Florida Democratic Party Chair

in Statewide by

Two weeks ago, it appeared that Alan Clendenin‘s hopes for becoming state chair of the Florida Democratic Party died after falling twelve votes short of being re-elected as Hillsborough County’s state committeeman. That position is one of just a handful in local Democratic Party politics that would qualify a candidate to run for state party chair. But in a stunning development, the DNC Committeeman and Tampa resident moved in recent days to North Florida, specifically Hampton in Bradford County, where there was a vacancy for their state committeeman position. On Monday…
