Toast to the Bay, Dump into the Bay: Karl Nurse and Sam Henderson

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

Toast: Karl Nurse’s environmental gusto As a lame duck City Council person, Karl Nurse has proven himself quite feisty. During a day chock full of legislative process, Nurse seized an opportunity to nail home a message he’s made no secret of – saving the environment. Thursday included for St. Pete City Council a full day of committee meetings, regular agendas, Community Redevelopment Area sessions and public hearings. And in the middle of it all, Nurse jumped on an admiral speaking…

One Gulfport precinct is out-voting rest of city

in The Bay and the 'Burg by

One Gulfport voting precinct is outperforming all the others in terms of early voter participation. More than 230 Gulfport voters had returned a mail ballot in Precinct 208 as of Wednesday afternoon. That’s more than any other Gulfport precinct by at least 150 depending on the precinct. The returned ballots represent total voter turnout of 9.52 percent in that precinct with a little over two weeks still left to return them. The disparity in turnout could be the potential result…

Barbara Banno calls Stonewall Democrat endorsement of Sam Henderson “tainted”

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

There’s an odd thing that happened in Gulfport this election cycle. Stonewall Democrats, a pro-LGBT political group, endorsed a straight candidate for mayor when a gay candidate is running against him. Both are Democrats. The group gave its official nod to Gulfport Mayor Sam Henderson for re-election, snubbing Barbara Banno of an endorsement she probably figured was in the bag. It doesn’t look very good for an openly gay Democrat to lose support from a pro-gay rights group to a…

Sam Henderson accused of “bullying” Gulfport City Councilmember

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

The gloves came off during a Gulfport City Council meeting Tuesday evening after City Council woman Yolanda Roman proposed a resolution calling for an action plan on continued testing and monitoring of water quality in Clam Bayou. The issue has been a hot button topic in the small city neighboring St. Pete since August when St. Pete diverted millions of gallons of sewage into the water body. Roman’s call for a resolution began innocent enough with City Council member Dan…

Barbara Banno fliers hit mailboxes ahead of Gulfport’s March election

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

Hitting mailboxes in Gulfport this week are mailers touting mayoral candidate Barbara Banno. With its bright greens and blues, the mail piece serves as a de facto resume for Banno, who faces incumbent Sam Henderson. “I have a vision for Gulfport’s brightest possible future,” says one side of the flier, which features a photo of Banno sitting on the waterfront. The flier lists several of Banno’s priorities if elected. The first is Banno’s staple campaign promise: providing “better solutions and…

Looking at numbers, Gulfport mayoral race is anyone’s guess

in The Bay and the 'Burg by

Taking a look at fundraising patterns is often a good indicator of a candidate’s eventual success, especially in local elections. On the other hand, the crystal ball in Gulfport’s mayoral race is a little foggy. Barbara Banno has grossly outraised incumbent Sam Henderson so far, but he appears to be catching up, and the two have about the same amount of cash on hand. Banno is doing a good job of raking in larger contributions, but Henderson is getting contributions…

Toast to the Bay/Dump into the Bay: Gulfport incumbents and Uhuru

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

Toast to the Bay: Gulfport incumbents  Candidates for the Gulfport municipal election March 15 got one chance to debate in front of voters ahead of the election next month. As such, performance was key. Two incumbents are facing challengers, Mayor Sam Henderson and Council member Dan Liedtke. Barbara Banno and April Thanos are running to unseat them. As challengers, the two have a heavier burden in wooing voters. Both failed to do that last night. As we wrote following the…
