in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

The woman accused of sending death threats to a man whose 6-year-old son was killed in the 2012 mass shooting at a school in Newtown, Connecticut, has been arrested after failing to show up in court. Jail records show 57-year-old Lucy Richards was arrested on Saturday in Hillsborough County in the Tampa Bay area. A judge issued an arrest warrant March 29 after Richards failed to show up in federal court in Fort Lauderdale for a change-of-plea hearing and sentencing.…

Darryl E. Owens: The horror of wounded empathy — or when mass shootings become humdrum

in Statewide/Top Headlines by

The day before I jetted to Charlotte for a weeklong vacation, unspeakable ugliness ambushed the City Beautiful. First, it descended upon an Orlando nightspot where more than 300 revelers came on “Latin Night” to live “la vida loca.” Later, it crept into my bedroom. Early that Sunday at Pulse, too many fathers, mothers, sons and daughters died — now destined to live forever in a purgatory that reduces rich, unique lives to a single grim number: 49. Newtown victim’s mom pens open letter after Orlando shooting

A woman whose 6-year-old daughter was killed in the shooting at Connecticut’s Sandy Hook Elementary School is expressing her grief over the Orlando nightclub shooting that left 49 people dead. In it she describes how hearing about the Orlando shooting took her back to the horror she felt as one…

Clinton’s campaign chairman, former Obama adviser John Podesta, called on Sanders to join Obama and Clinton by taking on the issue of liability for gun manufacturers whose firearms are used in a crime. And Clinton herself called in to a cable news show to challenge Sanders to…

Mitch Perry Report for 1.7.16 — Florida academic fired for unpopular (and um, questionable) views?

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

James Tracy was fired last month, though the Florida Atlantic University communications professor still can file a grievance to maintain his job. Although he would certainly dispute being labeled a conspiracy theorist, that’s essentially how I learned about him when I wrote a story about conspiracy theories in Creative Loafing. Tracy claimed the Sandy Hook elementary school massacre was fake. He also suggested that the Boston Marathon bombing and San Bernardino shooting were bogus as well. It’s when he got into a public dispute with the…

Mitch Perry Report for 6.19.15 — American terrorism, continued

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

The Charleston shootings on Wednesday night was clearly an act of domestic terrorism. The racial element was also first and foremost in the young killer’s motivation. Now what? “At some point, we as a country will have to reckon with the fact that this type of mass violence does not happen in other advanced countries,” President Obama said from the White House Briefing Room yesterday. “It doesn’t happen in other places with this kind of frequency. And it is in…
