What we did not hear from the Saint Petersburg Mayoral Candidates

in The Bay and the 'Burg by

As the race to be St. Petersburg’s next Mayor winds down, I have been surprised not only by some of the things the candidates did say, but also by some of the things they did not say. We did not hear Kathleen Ford personally attack Rick Baker. Instead, Ford used softer, generic terms, like “the current administration” to criticize the status quo. We did not hear Bill Foster talk about his conservative values. For all the criticism he endures for…

Bill Foster pulls ahead of field in latest poll

in The Bay and the 'Burg by

The mayor’s election is a four-way horse race, with more than a third of voters still undecided, a new St. Petersburg Times/Bay News 9 poll shows. Less than a week before the Sept. 1 primary, Bill Foster, Kathleen Ford, Deveron Gibbons and Scott Wagman have separated themselves from the 10-candidate pack. Foster led with 17 percent, followed by Ford and Gibbons with 13 percent each, and Wagman in fourth at 10 percent, according to a poll of 600 St. Petersburg…

Why would I ever describe Scott Wagman as ‘Nixonian’?

Someone asked me where I got off describing Scott Wagman’s presence at last week’s televised debate as “Nixonian.” Jeez, I don’t know…

Harsh reaction to St. Petersburg Times’ recommendation of Bill Foster for Mayor from Tampa Bay’s progressive community

in The Bay and the 'Burg by

Call it The Endorsement Heard ‘Round The ‘Burg. In what some St. Pete insiders view as pure Machiavellian journalism, if not a complete sell-out of its core beliefs, The St. Petersburg Times, one of the nation’s best liberal newspapers endorsed, err…”recommended” is the preferred term, Bill Foster, an anti-evolution, anti-gay candidate. As Wayne Garcia of Creative Loafing writes: Actually, the Foster recommendation should come as no surprise to Times’ readers who observed the editorial board’s changing tone ever since Tim…

Equality Florida says St. Pete’s next Mayor will be either Bill Foster or Scott Wagman

in Peter/The Bay and the 'Burg by

Sorry Kathleen Ford, you may be leading in the polls, with most political insiders predicting Ford is all but guaranteed a place in the General Election, but Equality Florida’s Nadine Smith says St. Pete’s next Mayor will be either Bill Foster or Scott Wagman. In a post on the Equality Florida blog, the normally intelligent Smith seems to forget about the front-running Ford, painting the mayoral campaign in rather stark terms: “The city’s next mayor will either be Scott Wagman…

10 things I think I think about the televised ‘Conversation with the Candidates’

in The Bay and the 'Burg by

1. The St. Petersburg Times should be embarrassed by the turnout at last night’s forum. There wasn’t more than 150 people in the audience, none of whom haven’t already made up their mind. The entire balcony was empty! That’s how bad the Times’ “picayune” coverage has been…that no one, and I mean no one, cares enough to show up for the only televised debate of the campaign. Where was the Police Chief or members of his command? Where were the…

Kathleen Ford, Bill Foster ahead, while Deveron Gibbons, Scott Wagman lag behind in latest poll

in The Bay and the 'Burg by

A new poll found mayoral candidates Kathleen Ford and Bill Foster are the frontrunners in the mayoral race. Ford was slightly ahead, with 22 percent of the vote. Foster had 21 percent of the vote. The poll, commissioned by the St. Petersburg Downtown Partnership, found 23 percent of voters were still undecided. Tel Opinion Research polled 400 voters. The poll has a margin of error of 3 to 3.5 percent margin, said Robert Kapusta, incoming chairman of the St. Petersburg…
